Salary: $34,000 per year, based on qualifications.

Job Product:Student understanding of English that furthers the development of character and intellect.

General Purpose: The English Assistant teacher is responsible for supporting the English Department Chair and English Teachers by providing students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to develop academic excellence, virtue, and leadership.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports implements of curriculum.
  • Supports in managing classroom climate and operation.
  • Meets professional responsibilities.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as needed or assigned.

Subject matter knowledge:

  • Knowledge of Standard English usage and composition.
  • Characteristics of the different genres of literature.
  • Various schools of literary criticism.
  • History and structure of the English language.
  • Knowledge of the rules and conventions of standard written and spoken English.
  • Rhetoric and composition.
  • Principles of classical rhetoric.
  • Modern and contemporary theories of rhetoric.
  • Similarities and differences between oral and written communication.
  • Reading theory, research, and practice at the middle and high school level.
  • Knowledge of one or more of the following:
  • Classical literature including Ancient Hebrew, Greek, and Roman literature (Greek mythology, Bible as literature, Homer, Sophocles, Aeschylus, Euripides, Cicero, etc.).
  • American literature including the Colonial Period, the Revolutionary Period, American Romanticism and the American Renaissance, the Civil War and the post-war period, as well as fiction, poetry, and drama from the early 20th century to the present (Edwards, Crevecoeur, Bradstreet, Franklin, Twain, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Steinbeck, Poe, Emerson, Dickinson, Whitman, Cummings, Frost, Eliot, Miller, etc.).
  • British and World literature (Anglo-Saxon period, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Restoration and the 18th century, the Romantic Period, the Victorian Period, and the 20th century) and other European literature, world myths, and folktales (Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Pope, the Romantic poets, Dickens, Wilde, Solzhenitsyn, Dante, etc.).
