Junior High Assistant Track & Field Coach

Position: Junior High Assistant Track Coach

Job Summary

Assist the head coach in organizing the track program at the assigned school. Conduct practices, motivate students, and instruct student athletes on game strategies and techniques.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the head coach with instructing students in rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of track & field.
  • Organize and direct individual and small group practice activities and exercises as directed by the head coach.
  • Assess students’ skills, monitor them during competition and practice, and keep the head coach informed of athletic performance.
  • Assist with determining game strategy.
  • Supervise athletes during practices and competitions.
  • Follow established injury procedures.
  • Model sports‑like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards students, officials, and spectators.
  • Maintain the equipment room in orderly condition and assume responsibility for its security.
  • Distribute equipment, supplies, and uniforms to students as directed by the head coach.
  • Accompany and supervise the team to and from all contests.
  • Perform support tasks such as distributing and maintaining eligibility forms, emergency information cards, and related records.
  • Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Assume responsibility for a group until all athletes are dressed and have left the building.
  • Consult with the head coach on team supplies and record keeping.
  • Obtain, transport, check, and refill the medical kit for all events.
  • Order and supply the medical kit through district nurses.
General Qualifications
  • Attend staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by the head coach, athletic director, principal, or other appropriate administrator.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Some experience as a track coach at the junior high or high school level preferred.
  • Possess effective coaching techniques and skills.
  • Have thorough knowledge of Illinois rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.

  • Exhibit concentrated mental and visual effort to plan and perform assigned work.
  • Maintain regular attendance.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Manual dexterity to dial a telephone, see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids.
  • Hear and understand speech at normal levels, outdoors and on the telephone.
  • Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly.
  • Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height.
  • Bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead.
