Job summary

First Roles is seeking a Junior Geotechnical Technician to join our engineering team. In this entry-level role, you will perform field and laboratory soil testing and analyze subsurface conditions to support foundation designs and site recommendations.

You will collect samples, log soil profiles, and assist engineers with preliminary testing summaries. The position requires outdoor work, a valid driver's license, and the ability to handle equipment safely on active construction sites.

Qualifications

Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated Junior Geotechnical Technician to join our engineering team. In this entry-level role, you will perform field and laboratory soil testing and execute soil analysis to evaluate subsurface conditions. Your work and data collection will directly support our engineering staff in developing foundation designs, earthwork plans, and site construction recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

• Field Testing & Sampling: Perform standard field soil testing (e.g., soil sampling, compaction testing, SPT/CPT testing) and assist with borehole drilling and site investigations.
• Laboratory Analysis: Conduct routine soil and aggregate laboratory tests (e.g., Atterberg limits, sieve analysis, moisture content, Proctor density) according to ASTM/AASHTO standards.
• Data Entry & Reporting: Accurately record field observations and laboratory testing data; log soil profiles for engineering analysis.
• Support Engineers: Help prepare subsurface exploration logs and preliminary testing summaries for geotechnical engineering reports.
• Equipment Maintenance: Operate, calibrate, and maintain field and lab testing equipment to ensure safety and quality control.

Qualifications

• Skills: Basic understanding of soil mechanics, strong attention to detail, basic computer proficiency, and solid written/verbal communication skills.
• Requirements: Valid driver’s license; physical ability to work outdoors, lift testing equipment (up to 50 lbs), and navigate active construction sites. Certifications (e.g., ACI, NICET, Troxler Nuclear Density Gauge) are a plus.
