Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) seeks attorneys to join the Adolescent Representation Unit in the Criminal Defense Practice in the Queens office. The unit represents youths up to 18 in Supreme and Family Court, with adolescence-focused advocacy and collaborative teams including social workers and investigators.

The role entails direct court representation, client counseling, and coordination with housing, immigration, family, and education practices to provide comprehensive services.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
• Admitted in New York State or admitted in another state and able to pursue Pro Hac Vice in New York.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience working with adolescents.
• Prior experience handling felony cases in New York or 3 years’ experience handling felony cases in another jurisdiction.

Responsabilités

• Direct representation of clients in Queens Family Court from intake through dismissal, plea/admission or trial.
• Foster attorney/client relationships with adolescent clients, including detention facility visits if incarcerated.
• Collaborate on interdisciplinary case teams with social workers, investigators, paralegals and admins.
• Staff intake shifts in Supreme Court Youth Part and Family Court Intake Part as part of rotation.
• Collaborate with housing, immigration, family and education teams to provide comprehensive client services.
• Prepare for and litigate hearings and trials in Family and Supreme Courts, and related tribunals.
• Argue motions and negotiate plea agreements to secure best outcomes for clients.
