Job summary

BART is seeking a Junior Engineer to support planning, design, analysis, implementation, and maintenance of engineering projects that enhance safety, reliability, and modernization of the BART system.

Under guidance of experienced engineers, you will apply engineering principles to real-world transit projects, prepare reports, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across the District. This is an entry-level, growth-focused role in the Bay Area.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university.
• Substitution allows experience in lieu of education on a year-for-year basis.
• Knowledge of engineering principles and practices.

Responsibilities

• Performs entry level professional engineering duties including specifications, analyses, and cost estimates.
• Conducts field inspections and investigations.
• Creates details addressing design challenges for projects.
• Assists in designing hardware/software modifications and testing equipment.
• Prepares engineering designs, cost estimates and quantity estimates for projects.
• Analyzes and resolves computer systems malfunctions.
• Supports train control scheduling and methods.

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is seeking a motivated and innovative Junior Engineer to support the planning, design, analysis, implementation, and maintenance of engineering projects that contribute to the safety, reliability, and modernization of the BART system. Under the guidance of experienced engineers and managers, Junior Engineers will have the opportunity to apply engineering principles to real-world transit projects, conduct technical analyses and investigations, prepare engineering documents and reports, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across the District.

Examples of Duties

• Performs a variety of entry level professional engineering duties including engineering specifications, computer systems applications, preliminary cost estimates, engineering drawings, calculations and analyses.
• Conducts field inspections and investigations.
• Creates customized details which address the unique design challenges of each individual project.
• Assists in designing computer hardware and software modifications.
• Assists in designing and specifying special testing and service equipment to troubleshoot and maintain transit vehicles.
• Modifies and compiles all relevant specifications for the project using BFS specifications as the baseline.
• Assists in preparing engineering designs, specification costs and quantity estimates for engineering construction projects.
• Analyzes and resolves computer systems malfunctions.
• Assists in the establishment of schedules and methods for train control support positions.
• Conducts special studies and prepares a variety of reports and correspondence.

Education

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university.

Substitution

Professional experience as outlined above may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis. A college degree is preferred.

• Basic principles and practices of the engineering discipline

Skill/Ability In

• Apply basic engineering principles and practices to the solution of engineering problems
• Conduct engineering studies and evaluations and write clear and concise reports
• Analyze technical problems, including those involving computer hardware and software
• Learn engineering division procedures and applicable laws, codes and regulations
• Interpret and prepare drawings and specifications
• Analyzing drawings and identifying assets
• Learn to prepare construction and/or installation cost estimates
• Keep accurate records
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work
