Job summary

Aescape, a New York-based physical AI and robotics company, is seeking a Junior Electrical & Firmware Engineer to join the hardware team. You will support schematic and PCB design, write firmware in C/C++, and bring boards up on the bench. This is a hands-on, early-career role with mentorship and ownership of subsystems.

Onsite at the NYC office in Chelsea, five days a week. You will work across electronics and embedded software, collaborating with engineers to ship hardware that users interact

Qualifications

• BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or related discipline; 0–3 years of experience.
• Solid grounding in analog and digital circuit design, power electronics, schematic capture.
• Working proficiency in C/C++ on microcontrollers; familiarity with Python for test automation.
• Hands-on with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and bench power supplies.
• Clear documentation of what was done and what was found.

Responsibilities

• Support schematic capture, component selection, and PCB layout review for motor drive, sensing, power, and control electronics.
• Write, test, and debug embedded firmware in C/C++ on microcontroller platforms.
• Bring up new hardware on the bench and debug across electrical and firmware boundaries.
• Build bench test setups, collect and analyze data, and drive decisions from measurements.
• Support production test fixtures, design for testability, and troubleshoot manufacturing issues.
• Partner with Mechanical, Controls, Software, and Operations on system bring‑up and communicate findings clearly.
• Produce schematics, BOMs, wiring diagrams, test plans, and test reports.

Aescape is looking for a Junior Electrical & Firmware Engineer to join our hardware team and work across the electronics and embedded software that make our robot move and sense. You will support schematic and PCB design, write and debug firmware on our embedded platforms, and spend significant time on the bench bringing boards up, instrumenting them, and fault finding across hardware and firmware. This is a hands‑on early‑career role on a small, senior team: you will be mentored closely by experienced engineers, given ownership of meaningful subsystems early, and you will ship hardware that real people experience with their bodies. This role is based out of our NYC office in Chelsea, onsite 5 days per week.

What You’ll Do

• Electrical Design Support: Support schematic capture, component selection, and PCB layout review for motor drive, sensing, power, and control electronics. Read datasheets closely, run the calculations behind a part choice, and help carry boards from design through fabrication and assembly.

• Firmware Development: Write, test, and debug embedded firmware in C/C++ on our microcontroller platforms: peripheral drivers, communication interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, CAN), sensor integration, and device control. Work within our version control, code review, and release practices.

• Board Bring-Up & Debug: Bring up new hardware on the bench, and debug across the electrical and firmware boundary using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, power supplies, and debuggers. Solder, rework, and instrument your own test setups.

• Test & Characterization: Build bench test setups, collect and analyze characterization data, and report what the data shows. Drive decisions from measured data and physics.

• Manufacturing & Supplier Support: Support production test fixtures, design for testability, and electrical builds with our contract manufacturer and suppliers. Help triage and root‑cause issues found in manufacturing and in the field.

• Cross-Functional Partnership: Partner with Mechanical, Controls, Software, and Operations on motor selection, drivers, sensors, and system bring‑up, and communicate what you find clearly to partners outside your discipline.

• Documentation: Produce the documentation others need to use your work: schematics, BOMs, wiring diagrams, test plans, and test reports.

What You’ll Bring

• Education & Experience: BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline, with 0–3 years of professional experience. Internships, co‑ops, research, competition teams, or substantial personal projects count.

• Circuit Fundamentals: Solid grounding in analog and digital circuit design, power electronics basics, and schematic capture in a professional tool such as Altium. You can read a datasheet and justify a component choice with numbers.

• Embedded Firmware & Python: Working proficiency in C or C++ on microcontrollers, bare‑metal or RTOS, with familiarity across common peripherals and communication protocols, and in Python for test automation and application‑level work. Comfortable with Git and code review.

• Lab Skills: Hands‑on with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and bench power supplies, and comfortable soldering and reworking your own boards.

• Debugging Mindset: You approach a failure with a clear question in mind: what is happening, why, and how would I prove it. You stay with a problem until you find the actual cause rather than a workaround.

• Cross-Disciplinary Curiosity: Interest in how electronics, firmware, and mechanics come together in a working machine, and comfort working with engineers outside your discipline.

• Communication: Clear written and verbal skills. You document what you did and explain what you found so others can act on it.

• Adaptability: A driven self‑starter who is comfortable with ambiguity and able to pivot as priorities shift in a fast‑moving startup; willing to take on work outside your core role when required.

• Nice to Have: Experience with brushless motor control or motor drivers, sensor signal conditioning, PCB layout, or robotics projects.

• Work Onsite: Ability to work from our NYC office 5 days a week.

Compensation: Base salary range of $95,000 - $125,000 annually, plus discretionary annual bonus, plus equity grant commensurate with the role and company stage. Full-time employees are also eligible for our comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k), paid time off, and paid parental leave.
