Job description

Introduction

Peckham Industries Inc. (PII) has been a family run business since 1924 and we believe our "family by choice" ethos delivers value as the trusted supplier of construction materials, products, and services in the communities we serve. Through our extensive network of hot mix asphalt and ready-mix concrete plants, quarries, and liquid asphalt terminals, PII delivers the highest quality materials and custom solutions to thousands of road construction and road maintenance customers.

Overview

As a Junior DevSecOps Engineer, you will help build the next generation of infrastructure for Peckham Industries. Working alongside our infrastructure and software/data teams, you will implement code scanning and security tooling, scalable infrastructure deployment tools such as Ansible, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform. The goal of this role is to bring Peckham to a best-in-class level on our security and infrastructure deployment standards for the line of business applications we develop or customize.

This is an entry-level position combining infrastructure, DevOps, and security engineering. It is well suited to a motivated engineer who wants to grow across all three disciplines with the support of senior staff. You will support Microsoft Azure and on-premises environments, contribute to CI/CD pipelines, and provide second-level support to the help desk as needed. This role requires strong documentation practices and effective communication across the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Mastery. Develop hands-on expertise in Infrastructure as Code (IaC), configuration management, and application security tooling. Build and maintain Terraform modules and Ansible playbooks that define and deploy Peckham's infrastructure in a repeatable, version-controlled manner.
  • Implement and maintain automated code scanning and security tooling (static analysis, dependency and vulnerability scanning, secrets detection) within source control and CI/CD pipelines for the line of business applications Peckham develops or customizes.
  • Innovation. Research, evaluate, and recommend tools, patterns, and practices that raise Peckham’s security posture and infrastructure deployment standards to a best-in-class level. Contribute to the design of Peckham’s next generation infrastructure.
  • Build, configure, and maintain CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions) that deploy applications consistently and safely across development, test, and production environments.
  • Provision and support Microsoft Azure resources (compute, networking, identity, storage) and Windows and Linux servers using automation and IaC rather than manual configuration wherever practical.
  • Ownership and caring. Take responsibility for the reliability and security of the environments and pipelines you build. Ensure backup, recovery, and redundancy protocols are defined, documented, and tested.
  • Monitor infrastructure and application health, respond to alerts and security findings, remediate vulnerabilities promptly, and maintain composure under pressure from impacted business groups.
  • Automate routine operational and deployment tasks using PowerShell, Python, or Bash.
  • Communication. Document architecture, standards, runbooks, and procedures clearly. Communicate status, risks, and recommendations effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders across the organization.
  • Provide second-level support to the help desk for infrastructure, deployment, and security-related issues, ensuring seamless IT operations.
  • Participate in small to mid-scale projects and follow change management procedures. Maintain all documentation regarding infrastructure, pipelines, and security tooling.
Requirements
  • Associate degree (2-year) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical discipline required. Bachelor's or advanced degree desired but not required.
  • Entry-level role; 0-3 years of relevant technical experience. Internship, co-op, lab, or personal project experience with cloud, automation, or security tooling is welcome.
  • Foundational knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Fundamental networking knowledge, including TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls, and network routing.
  • Familiarity with a public cloud platform, preferably Microsoft Azure.
  • Exposure to Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and configuration management (Ansible); hands-on experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with version control (Git) and CI/CD concepts.
  • Awareness of application security fundamentals, including the OWASP Top 10, vulnerability scanning, and secrets management.
  • Practical scripting experience in PowerShell, Python, or Bash to automate tasks and processes.
  • Understanding of Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) is a plus.
  • Ability to assess the risks of infrastructure changes and maintenance outages and understand the consequences of such actions.
  • Commitment to staying updated on technological changes and advancements in cloud, DevOps, and security practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective collaboration within a team environment.
  • Solid understanding of IT ticketing systems, their functionality, and the importance of daily ticket updates.
  • Willingness to learn from senior engineers and grow across infrastructure, DevOps, and security disciplines.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., AZ-900, Terraform Associate, Security+) are a plus but not required.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
