Job summary

Widewail, a Burlington, VT based startup, is hiring a Backend Engineer to transform high‑level ideas into reliable software. You will help define product‑level architecture, build backend services, and ensure quality through testing and reviews.

You will collaborate with senior engineers, integrate third‑party APIs, and participate in deployments while learning our systems. Remote US-based candidates are welcome.

Qualifications

• 0-2 years of backend development experience through internships, projects, or prior roles.
• Understanding of HTTP and RESTful APIs.
• SQL fundamentals and ability to query a relational database such as MySQL or Postgres.
• Git proficiency and experience working in pull requests.
• Testing basics with JUnit or similar, and a habit of validating your changes.
• Communicates clearly, asks good questions, and is receptive to feedback.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to backend services and APIs.
• Implement well‑scoped features and fixes, from design discussion to pull request.
• Write clear tests and follow our code review process.
• Work with senior engineers to integrate third‑party APIs and internal services.
• Participate in deployments and basic monitoring with a mentor.
• Document what you build so others can understand and extend it.
• Learn our architecture and suggest small improvements as you ramp.
