Job description

Jr. Criminal Defense Associate (Misdemeanor Experience Required) At The Nieves Law Firm, APC, we believe in creating trusting relationships with clients. We are seeking a full‑time Associate Attorney with experience in a private criminal defense setting or a Public Defender's office. Candidates with jury trial, preliminary hearing, and misdemeanor experience are preferred, but we are willing to coach hardworking and committed team members who have at least one year of demonstrable experience with criminal law, post‑conviction, and restraining order concepts. Candidates must be high‑energy and willing to hit the ground running. The right candidates will be able to manage their time and cases effectively. This is a fast‑paced position, but it is ideal for someone who is still committed to providing quality service to every client in the firm at all times, no matter the pace. We are seeking candidates who work hard to produce excellent results.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain confidentiality and objectivity.
  • Prepare for hearings in advance, research potential issues, guide the clients clearly, and provide strategic advice.
  • Advocate for and secure the best possible outcome for clients.
  • Be familiar with and apply post‑conviction remedies.
  • Stay up to date on changes in the law.
  • Properly advise clients on the direct and collateral consequences of their case.
  • Draft and submit motions and other filings on time, meeting internal and external deadlines.
  • Arrive at work and court on time in professional and appropriate attire.
  • Maintain a good rapport with clients and treat them with respect.
  • Participate in ongoing training as required by the firm.
  • Participate in networking and community events as required by the firm.
  • Accurately and concurrently bill time.
Qualifications
  • 1‑5 years of Criminal Defense experience.

  • Possess a J.D. and be in good standing with the State Bar of CA.

  • Admission to the California Bar and capacity to attend court in the Bay Area.
  • Experience with jury trial, preliminary hearing, and misdemeanor cases preferred.
  • Experience with post‑conviction remedies and restraining order concepts.
  • Second‑language skills encouraged.
Compensation & Benefits

$100,000 – $135,000 per year, depending on years of experience and criminal defense experience. Benefits include base salary plus contributions to health/dental/vision plans, 401(k), mileage reimbursement, use of company car, bar dues, malpractice insurance, parking, student loan assistance, and other bonuses.
