Junior Engineer $9,082.25 - $12,779.50 Monthly Plus Excellent Benefits

Assistant Engineer $10,032.33 - $14,116.50 Monthly Plus Excellent Benefits

Associate Engineer $11,035.58 - $15,528.17 Monthly Plus Excellent Benefits

Additional steps (Step F, Step G, and Step H) included in the salary range listed above are available to employees in this job classification after completion of five years of service (Step F), ten years of service (Step G), and 15 years of service (Step H), and one year at the prior step, and good performance evaluation. Initial salary placement is typically at the entry point of the range unless the candidate has prior Civil Engineer experience which may warrant initial placement at a higher step.

Opportunity to work a 9/80 work schedule with every other Friday off.

This is a full-time on-site position that actively supports department operations.

ABOUT THE POSITIONS

The City of Gilroy is currently recruiting for Junior Engineer, Assistant Engineer, or an Associate Engineer position within the Utilities Department. Depending on qualifications and experience, candidates may be considered for the appropriate level within the City’s three-level professional civil engineering series. Under the direction of a Senior Civil Engineer, you will perform engineering work in both the field and office, with assignments and level of responsibility ranging from entry-level, pre-professional work to journey-level professional engineering.

In Utilities, you will play a key role in planning, designing, coordinating and delivering the infrastructure necessary to provide safe, reliable, and sustainable water and wastewater services for the City of Gilroy. You will be part of a collaborative team working on a wide variety of projects, including water and wastewater capital improvements, infrastructure planning and design, development review, permitting, and construction.

Depending on classification and experience, assignments may include engineering analysis, project planning and design, plan review, field inspections, construction support, project management, and coordination with consultants, contractors, developers, and other agencies. As you progress through the engineering series, you will take on increasingly complex assignments, greater independence and decision‑making responsibility, and opportunities to lead projects and provide technical guidance to other engineering staff. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL
  • Be passionate about applying civil engineering knowledge and ideas to plan, design, improve, deliver, essential water and wastewater infrastructure.
  • Support or lead the planning, coordination, and delivery of utility capital projects, depending on experience and level of responsibility.
  • Contribute to the design, review, and construction of water and wastewater infrastructure.
  • Apply technical expertise and sound engineering judgment to analyze challenges, evaluate alternatives, and develop practical solutions.
  • Interpret and prepare engineering plans, specifications, studies, estimates, reports, and contract documents with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Conduct or support plan review, field inspections, permitting, and construction activities to help ensure projects comply with applicable codes, standards, plans, and specifications.
  • Collaborate effectively with consultants, contractors, developers, City staff, regulatory agencies, and community members to understand needs and resolve issues.
  • Use engineering and project management tools effectively, including AutoCAD, Bluebeam, GIS, Microsoft Office, and other applicable software.
  • Keep projects and priorities moving forward through strong organization, project management, time management, and follow-through.

EXCITING FIRST YEAR PROJECTS
  • Multiple water main line replacements
  • Rehabilitation and repair of the Joint Trunk Sewer Main serving Morgan Hill and Gilroy
  • Design and Construction of a new Water Well
  • Steel service line replacements
  • Rehabilitation or retrofit of existing Water Wells to comply with water quality standards
QUALIFICATIONS
JUNIOR ENGINEER
  • Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or other engineering field deemed relevant by the City. Paid professional experience can substitute for up to two years of the education on a year-to-year basis at the sole discretion of the City. For those with a Bachelor’s degree, internship(s) and other related work experience is highly desirable, but not required.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class C California Driver's License and a safe driving record necessary to operate assigned vehicle(s).
  • Willing to continue education and training, expand skills, attend classes, seminars, webinars, and workshops, and complete individual study.
  • Pass an employment background check including a criminal records check.
  • Pass a post-offer medical examination, which includes a drug test.
  • Prefer non-tobacco user.
ASSISTANT ENGINEER
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or other engineering field deemed relevant by the City.
  • At least two years of full-time work experience at a level equivalent to the City of Gilroy Junior Engineer position with strong work performance. Equivalency in evaluating work experience shall be at the sole discretion of the City of Gilroy. Preference may be given to candidates with specific Utilities related work experience.
  • Possess a California Engineer in Training (EIT) Certificate.
  • Ongoing study and work toward registration as a Professional (Civil) Engineer in the State of CA is strongly encouraged but not required.
ASSOCIATE ENGINEER
  • At least four years of full-time work experience, with at least two years at a level equivalent to the City of Gilroy Assistant Engineer position with strong work performance.
  • Possess certification as a Registered Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California.
