Position Overview:

Analysts in the Player Projections department build models to predict player performance, in support of player acquisition, development, and deployment. The Nationals are seeking Analysts capable of building high quality data pipelines, conducting and incorporating advantage-seeking research, utilizing a deep knowledge of statistics and probability to build forecasts, and ensuring those forecasts impact outcomes on the field. The Junior Analyst, Player Projections will perform those duties in the context of major and minor league players, building models to explain and predict the performance of potential trade and free agent acquisitions while engaging with other departments (Acquisitions, Development, and Operations) and leadership to improve organizational decision-making.

Qualifications:
  • High-stakes decision-making under uncertainty
  • Programming (Python, R, etc.) and AI agent integration
  • Statistical modeling, forecasting, and probabilistic programming (using Stan, PyMC, etc.)
  • Machine learning methods and model evaluation
  • Data engineering and pipelining (SQL, etc.)
  • Ability to communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders about baseball research
  • Deep understanding of prospect valuation and/or a baseball focus area (hitting, pitching, fielding, baserunning, catcher defense, etc.)
  • Excellent communication, project/product management, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative, and highly confidential environment

Compensation:

The projected annual salary range for this position is $65,000-$80,000 per year. Actual pay is based on several factors, including but not limited to the applicant’s: qualifications, skills, expertise, education/training, certifications, and other organization requirements. Starting salaries for new employees are frequently not at the top of the applicable salary range.
