Job summary

The NC Department of Adult Correction is seeking a Judicial Services Specialist (JSS) to supervise and direct probation and community supervision staff. This role includes court processing, assigning cases, and monitoring caseloads with CSAS to ensure timely and accurate handling of cases.

The Division of Community Supervision (DCS) oversees probation, parole, and reentry initiatives, collaborating with courts and other agencies to safeguard public safety and support offender rehabilitation.

Qualifications

Salary Grade: NC07

Salary Grade Range: $37,377.00 - $65,408.00

Recruitment Range: $37,377.00 - $52,000.00

This posting is located at: 1416 S. Horner Boulevard Sanford, NC 27330

The typical work schedule is Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm, 40 hours a week.

The Judicial Services Specialist (JSS) will be in direct control of the supervision and work assignments for all personnel within their area, which will include court processing, assignment of cases to Judicial Services Coordinators, and monitoring of caseloads through CSAS to maintain a balance among the staff. The position shall obtain all information regarding new probation and community service cases placed under the Division of Community Corrections' authority.

This JSS will review and approve staff work within their unit and make certain that cases are processed timely and accurately. This position is responsible for interviewing offenders, entering data into OPUS/CSAS/ICOTS, assigning offenders for supervision, determining if the offender requires interpreter services, identifying if the offender requires accommodations under the ADA, providing reporting instructions to the offender, processing intrastate and interstate transfer cases out of court, and making adjustments to meet the demands of the court.

Additional job duties entail:
  • The intake of all new supervised and unsupervised probation cases and, in specified areas, monitoring deferred prosecution.
  • Reviewing proposed recipient agencies for appropriateness according to Community Supervision policy and guidelines.
  • Reporting the compliance status of offenders who have been ordered to perform community service.
  • Performing case reviews to ensure effective services, appropriate follow-up, and adherence to Community Supervision policy.
  • Planning their day-to-day work operations as well as their staff, setting priorities, scheduling, and establishing deadlines for the caseload.
  • Completing performance appraisals on their assigned Judicial Services Coordinators.

The Judicial Services Specialist (JSS) is frequently in court and will associate with judges, lawyers, district attorneys, clerks of court, law enforcement, etc.

About the Division of Community Supervision (DCS)

The Division of Community Supervision (DCS) is responsible for overseeing the supervision of adult offenders on probation, parole, or post-release. The DCS mission is to ensure public safety while helping offenders make positive changes and successfully complete their supervision. DCS collaborates closely with the NC Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission, the court system, as well as other state agencies, and community partners, particularly those addressing mental health, substance use, and re-entry issues faced by our returning citizens. DCS is also responsible for the supervision of offenders who transfer from other states through the Interstate Compact program and has oversight of the Community Service Work Program.
