Job description

Journeyman Tool and Die Maker - West Babylon/Long Island, New York

Check-Mate Manufacturing is offering a competitive salary and benefits package for the position of Tool and Die Maker. This role reports to the Tooling Manager and requires a Journeyman license or completion of a formal apprenticeship program. The Tool and Die Maker builds, repairs, and maintains dies, fixtures, and other tooling according to customer and company specifications, analyzing designs, setting up and operating machine tools, and fitting and assembling parts to create and repair dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools. Ensuring a safe working environment by adhering to safety procedures is also essential.

Skills and Competencies

• Ability to read tool and die designs and prints
• Basic shop math and trigonometry skills
• Proficiency with precise measuring equipment (micrometers, calipers, gauge blocks, dial indicators)
• Experience operating standard tool room equipment (milling machines, drill presses, surface grinders, lathes); CNC setup a plus
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
• Knowledge of tool and die design and tool steels/carbides applications is a plus
• Ability to work independently, be self-motivated, and lead small teams
• Experience working with outside vendors
• Ability to train and develop apprentices
• Good communication skills

Minimum Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent; trade school diploma preferred
• Journeyman Tool & Die Maker certification and/or completion of an apprenticeship (4 years), plus 4 years of on-the-job training
• At least 5 years’ experience in the trade, especially with small precision stampings from progressive dies
• Effective communication skills in English (preferred)
• Knowledge of AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and EDM is a plus
