Job summary

Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) is seeking Journeyman/Skilled Trades Tutors for on-site, multiple openings. The role involves guiding apprentices, overseeing student projects, and delivering hands-on technical support across crafts such as welding, electrical, machining, and automotive technology.

Qualifications

• Earned a high school diploma or GED.

Responsibilities

• Guide entry-level students, i.e. apprentices, to develop the skills and competencies of the vocation or industry.
• Inspect to diagnose problems areas in each student’s work.
• Coordinate with faculty develop, implement, and inspect student projects.
• Conduct workshops to reinforce project elements.
• Use a variety of instructional techniques to meet students’ learning needs.
• Integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize students’ potential for academic progress.
• Collaborate with Center for Academic Engagement staff, College faculty, Student Support Services staff, and other constituents to deliver a comprehensive learning support program.
• Maintain a positive, learner-centered, and professional environment.
• Develop resources for student, faculty, and staff use.
• Follow and communicate Center for Academic Engagement policies and procedures.
• Keep accurate records of performance, and progress.
• Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance learning support skills, and industry knowledge.
• Promote the college’s tutoring and journeyman program during outreach activities and events.
• Demonstrate and model the college’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility, and teamwork.

The Center for Academic Engagement’s Journeyman/Skilled Trades Tutor are skilled and experienced workers whose role will align with the industry in which they are involved (i.e., welders, electricians, machinists, automotive technicians, etc.). As a provider of learning and technical support, the journeyman will utilize their skills and expertise while leading unskilled or entry‑level students, overseeing student projects, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Journeyman will also possess the ability to work independently with little to no supervision, a commitment to continuous learning, and the motivation to mentor apprentices within their realm of influence.

Experience Required

• One year of experience as a journeyman and/or providing learning support within your vocation

Experience Preferred

• Three years of experience as a journeyman and providing learning support within your vocation
• Previous work experience in an educational institution instructing English language learners, students with disabilities, and adult learners.
• Proficiency in using the Canvas learning management systems.
• Proficiency in using Microsoft environments.

Department/Job Specific Requirements

• Must be available for in‑person tutoring and open to travel to various campus locations throughout the week.
• Scheduling allows for up to 25 hours per week, at least 15 hours must be on‑site.
