Job summary

Southland Industries is seeking a safety-focused supervisor to lead a small crew, ensure daily safety compliance, and meet production goals. You will conduct toolbox talks, investigate incidents, and maintain a clean, organized work area while orienting new crew members.

Ideal candidates bring 5+ years as a tradesperson, strong leadership and communication skills, and OSHA-30 certification (to be obtained within 6 months). Union membership is required in this role.

  • Ability to manage diverse workforce.
  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • 5+ years as a qualified tradesperson.
  • OSHA-30 certification to be obtained within 6 months from hire.
  • Union membership is a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and lead a small work crew to safety and productivity.
  • Facilitate a safe work culture and ensure adherence to safety standards.
  • Conduct weekly toolbox talks and answer safety questions.
  • Participate in safety/incident investigations and reviews.
  • Complete safety reports within the required timeframe.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, organized work area and orient new crew members.
  • Assess crew competency and set production benchmarks.
  • Assign tasks and maintain work standards to keep morale high.
  • Promote teamwork and resolve scheduling conflicts with other crews.
  • Ensure work meets plans/blueprints and production goals.
  • Perform THA daily at shift start and before tasks.
  • Provide input on personnel actions and project plans.

Supervise, provide leadership, and ensure the safety and productivity of a small work crew.

  • Facilitate a safe work culture.
  • Ensure crew members adhere to the standards for safe working conditions and are fit for work each day.
  • Conduct weekly “toolbox” talks.
  • Provide answers to technical safety questions or seek answers from a competent authority.
  • Participate in safety/incident investigations and reviews.
  • Complete incidents and other safety reports withinappropriatetimeframe.
  • Ensure the work area is consistently clean, safe, and organized.
  • Ensure new crew members are oriented to the job.
  • Assess the competency and capability of each crew member.Establish benchmarks to ensure that each meets the required levels of quality and productivity.
  • Assign individual and crew tasks.
  • Set and maintain work standards. Outline behavioral expectations to ensure crew morale and productivity remain positive.
  • Promote, support, andfacilitateteamwork.
  • Perform related craftwork along with crew.
  • Understand project plans and schedules. Ensure the crew’s daily and weekly activities meet production goals.
  • Identifyand/or verify that all tools and materials required by the crew are available and complete.
  • Identifyneeds and deficiencies in the plan/schedule and communicate these to theappropriate persons.
  • Translate general work requirements into a prioritized plan for individual tasks and assignments.
  • Review and adjust specific project activities and task schedules to meet established production schedules.
  • Advisesuperintendentof equipment and material shortages.
  • Work with the crew to overcome work challenges.
  • Resolve or report any scheduling conflicts with other crews and contractors to theappropriate persons.
  • Ensure that completed work meets standards. Recommend work processes that will improve productivity and product quality.
  • Ensure the crew works to job specifications andfollowsthe plans/blueprints.
  • Inspect completed work andinitiatetimelyresolutions to any problems.
  • EnsureTask Hazard Analysis (THA) is performed and recorded daily at the start of the shift and before any tasks are performed.
  • Recommend personnel actions such as hiring, promotions and discipline.
  • Perform additional assignments as requested/needed.
Qualifications
  • Familiarity with other construction trades and crafts
  • Knowledge and understanding of OSHA safety regulations as well as company safety policies and procedures
  • Strong leadership
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to solve problems and resolve conflicts
  • Ability to manage differences and diversity at the workplace
  • High school degree or equivalent
  • 5+ years’ experience as a qualified tradesperson
  • OSHA-30 certification (if not currently certified, must be obtained within six (6) months from date of hire)
  • Employment is contingent upon active membership in the appropriate local trade union
