Job summary

The City of Independence is seeking a Journeyman Meterman to inspect, test, calibrate, install, and repair electrical meters within the Power and Light system. Work includes metering calculations, wiring, and software familiarity for programming solid-state meters.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver's license, and complete NIMS training within six months of hire. Outdoor work predominates, with occasional office or shop tasks and mandatory background checks.

Responsibilities

• Inspects, tests, calibrates, installs, and repairs electrical meters and meter systems.
• Performs calculations related to metering (voltage, current, phase angle, registers, watts, RPM, multipliers).
• Establishes familiarity with manufacturer’s software for programming solid-state metering.
• Performs routine or scheduled change out of meters and related electrical wiring tasks.
• Maintains records of meter installations, service calls, and test results.

Job description

Inspects, tests, calibrates, installs, and repairs electrical meters and meter systems within the City of Independence Power and Light system. Wires and installs transformer rated meters. Performs computations related to metering i.e., volt, amp phase angle, register ratio, watthour constant, RPM, revolution check, register multiplier, meter multiplier, demand, and standard revolutions. Performs inspections and tests to prove correct metering. Establishes familiarity with various manufacturer’s software in order to establish files for the programming of solid-state metering on each type of meter device. Sets electronic recorders to verify amperage and voltage; prints out reports from computer programs. Investigates customer complaints; maintains records of meter installations and service calls. Cleans, inspects, and repairs meters ready for testing. Performs routine or scheduled change out of metes. Performs electrical wiring for maintenance of Power and Light facilities. Performs related duties.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D.; and current status as a Journeyman Meterman from an approved apprenticeship program. Must possess a valid Driver's License. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Physical Demands

Ability to navigate all types of terrain. Ability to bend and lift equipment, tools, etc. weighing 50 lbs. Vision sufficient to operate heavy equipment. Hand dexterity to operate job related equipment. Speech communication, vision and hearing sufficient to communicate with other workers, customers, and property owners.

Typical Working Conditions

Work is performed outdoors 85% of the time, 15% in an office or shop setting. Exposure to outdoor conditions of extreme heat and cold, adverse weather conditions, and sites with uneven terrain. Occasional exposure to chemicals.
