Job summary

The City of Independence seeks a skilled Journeyman Lineman to install and maintain overhead and underground power distribution lines—from generators to consumers. You will install poles, transformers, insulators and related equipment, splices, and interpret blueprints to meet safety and reliability standards.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, Journeyman Lineman status, a valid Class A CDL, and complete NIMS training within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Install and maintain overhead and underground power distribution lines.
• Install overhead equipment such as poles, crossarms, insulators, arrestors, switches and transformers; install underground equipment like primary wires and vaults.
• Splice and insulate conductors and related wiring to join sections during repairs; interpret blueprints and procedures.

Job description

Performs complex duties involving the installation and maintenance of overhead or underground power distribution lines used to conduct electrical energy between generating stations, substations, and consumers. Installs overhead equipment such as poles, crossarms, insulators, arrestors, switches and transformers, and underground equipment such as primary wires, vaults, pad mounted transformers, etc. Splices and insulates conductors and related wiring to join sections of power lines during repairs; interprets blueprints of line locations specifications, and procedure books. Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent. Status as a Journeyman Lineman. Must possess a valid class "A" Commercial Driver's License. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire.

Physical Demands:

Ability to climb poles and navigate all types of terrain. Ability to bend and lift equipment, tools, etc. weighing 50 to 100 lbs. Ability to work at heights of 25 ft. and above. Hand dexterity to operate job related equipment. Speech communication, vision and hearing sufficient to communicate with other workers, customers, and property owners.

Typical Working Conditions:

Work is performed outdoors 95% of the time, 5% performed in a warehouse, dock, or office setting. Exposure to outdoor conditions of extreme heat and cold and adverse weather conditions. May be required to remain on call 24 hours daily during emergency conditions.

Opportunity is available to earn quarterly retention bonus of up to $2,500 for eligible non-probationary employees who meet the requirements as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.
