Journeyman Ironworker Structural Steel & Metal Building Installer

LOCATION: Watertown, SD

COMPANY: Sentry

Help Build the Backbone of Every Project

At Sentry, we're more than a construction company — we're a full-service EPC team that self-performs across the board. From structural steel and pre-engineered metal buildings to concrete, electrical, and mechanical, our work is complex, fast-paced, and grounded in real results.

As a Journeyman Ironworker, you'll play a critical role in the success of every vertical build we undertake. This isn't an entry-level role — it's for someone with grit, technical skill, and a proven track record of safety and reliability. You will be expected to work independently or lead apprentices with a focus on three non-negotiables: Safety, Quality, and Efficiency.

What You'll Be Doing

You will be responsible for erecting structural steel frames, connecting beams and columns, and ensuring every bolt-up, weld, and lift is done correctly the first time. You will work closely with foremen, project managers, and crane operators to deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality installations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret blueprints and detailed erection plans
  • Bolt-up, weld, and secure structural members with precision
  • Rig, hoist, and place steel using cranes, forklifts, chain falls, come-a-longs, and other heavy equipment
  • Ensure structures are plumb, square, and aligned before sheeting or decking begins
  • Unload, shake out, and stack prefabricated steel using correct rigging procedures
  • Lead or support apprentices while maintaining productivity and safety standards
  • Erect and dismantle steel frames, place machinery, install deck, stairs, and guardrails
  • Operate lifts and equipment including scissor lifts, boom lifts, and forklifts
  • Install insulation, wall panels, and standing seam roofing systems on PEMBs
  • Perform welding, torch cutting, grinding, and metal bending as needed
  • Maintain clean, organized, and hazard-free work zones at all times
  • Follow rigging standards, crane signaling, and OSHA-compliant safety protocols

What We're Looking For

This role is for an experienced tradesperson who takes pride in their craft and doesn't cut corners. If you're a high-performing ironworker who thrives in a fast-paced, hands-on environment and wants to be part of a team that builds things that last, we want to hear from you.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 45+ years of experience as an ironworker, including formal apprenticeship completion
  • Proficient in structural steel erection, rigging, and blueprint reading
  • Hands-on experience with welding equipment, grinders, shears, and layout tools
  • Familiarity with pre-engineered metal buildings and structural steel frames
  • Ability to lead small teams or apprentices and maintain productivity standards
  • Physically fit and able to lift 60+ lbs, climb, bend, kneel, and work at heights
  • 3G and 4G welding certifications preferred or willingness to obtain
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • High regard for safety, communication, and craftsmanship

We Hire by Our Core Values

  • Hard Work: Show up early, stay until the job is done, and take pride in the hustle
  • Integrity: Do things the right way — even when no one's watching
  • Optimism: Approach problems with solutions and help lift those around you
  • Passion: Be proud of your work and your team
  • Ride for the Brand: Believe in loyalty and support the company's mission

What We Offer

  • Top pay based on experience, with additional compensation for overtime and certifications
  • Full benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match and financial planning resources
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Company-provided PPE, tools, and equipment
  • Opportunities for training, mentoring, and advancement to foreman or superintendent roles
  • Team-first culture where your work is valued and your voice is heard

Join a team that builds with pride.
