Job description

Overview

The heating, ventilation and air-conditioning mechanic installs, services and repairs environmental-control systems in residences, department stores, office buildings, and other commercial establishments, utilizing knowledge of refrigeration theory, pipefitting and structural layout. This includes:

1. Mounting compressor and condenser units on platform or floor, using hand tools, following blueprints or engineering specifications.
2. Fabricating, assembling and installing ductwork and chassis parts, using portable metalworking tools and welding equipment.
3. Installing evaporator units in chassis or air-duct systems.
4. Cutting and bending tubing to correct lengths and shapes, using cutting and bending equipment and tools.
5. Joining tubing or pipes to refrigeration units using sleeves, couplings, unions, and solder joints.
6. Connecting motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels.
7. Observing pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusting controls to ensure proper operation.
8. Replacing defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring to repair installed units.

This mechanic may install, repair, and service air conditioners ranging from fifteen to twenty (20) tons cooling capacity in warehouse and small factory buildings.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

• Thorough knowledge of EMS to make operational changes to remote HVAC equipment throughout the facility.
• Licensed journeyman in HVAC with advanced knowledge of electronic circuitry, high and low voltage electricity, pneumatic and electronic control systems.
• Ability to interpret technical documents to complete installations and repairs, often without direct supervision.
• Working knowledge of other trades such as sheet metal, plumbing, and electrical systems.
• Proficient in soldering and brazing, with specialized training in HVAC.
• Familiarity with test equipment such as volt-meters, ammeters, and leak detectors.
• Ability to perform physical tasks including climbing ladders, carrying heavy tools, and working in hazardous conditions.

Required Experience

• Universal CFC Certification
• Journeyman's License in Virginia
• Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the Secret level
• Valid Driver's License
• Ten (10) years or more experience as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician
