Job Summary

Under the supervision of the head custodian, performs general cleaning and maintenance in school buildings and grounds, maintains equipment, and provides custodial assistance to students, staff, teachers, administrators, visitors, and others as necessary. May help with building security by locking/unlocking doors and doing final lock-up at night, including activating security systems. Work hours and shifts may vary. Attendance and punctuality are required. This position includes working sixteen hours during winter break with additional paid time off to be used before July 31 of the following year, coordinated with school administration.

Essential Functions

• Assist with routine maintenance of school and district buildings.
• Secure building at start and end of shift for safety and cleanliness.
• Clean rooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, offices, stairways, and other areas.
• Wash walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, sills, and touchpoints.
• Maintain, clean, and sanitize restrooms.
• Refill soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and other dispensers.
• Operate mops and auto scrubbers.
• Extract and bonnet carpets.
• Assist with floor refinishing.
• Remove garbage.
• Maintain grounds, including mowing, edging, snow removal, weeding, watering, and sweeping.
• Remove graffiti and repair vandalism if possible.
• Repair furniture, lockers, doors, and small equipment.
• Perform minor repairs on windows, doors, switches, desks, tables, and appliances.
• Assemble new equipment and furniture.
• Set up rooms for meetings and activities, and clean afterward.
• Maintain swimming pools, including chemical treatment.
• Help operate mechanical systems.
• Assist with building security by locking/unlocking doors and managing security systems.

Non-Essential Functions

• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

• Operate and maintain cleaning equipment such as buffers, extractors, and scrubbers.
• Perform minor adjustments to equipment.
• Understand proper use of cleaning solvents.
• Know emergency procedures like shelter-in-place, lockdowns, fire, and earthquake drills.
• Follow oral and written instructions.
• Basic reading and math skills.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• One year of full-time custodial experience.

Decision Making & Interactions

Makes decisions on task execution, takes direction, and suggests improvements. Interacts positively with students, staff, and district personnel, and may supervise custodial staff.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Works inside and outside, in various weather conditions. May encounter hazards from equipment, chemicals, and physical tasks. Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs., stand for long periods, and have good vision.
