Job summary

AC Transit is seeking Journey Level Mechanics to diagnose, inspect, and repair coach systems in a busy California maintenance facility. The role requires 4–7 years of automotive experience; diesel experience is not required, as training is provided.

The position offers extensive benefits, growth opportunities, and a path to supervisory roles within a Union environment. Responsibilities include diagnosing vehicle systems, performing overhauls, and ensuring safety and reliability of fleet buses.

Qualifications

Education: 12th grade plus apprentice program or 2-year training program in automotive/heavy-duty maintenance.
Experience: 4 years of recent automotive/heavy equipment experience; 3 extra years may substitute for education.

Responsibilities

Diagnose causes of defective operation across engines, transmissions, generators, starters, and other coach components.
Determine the proper course of action to repair, maintain, adjust, and replace damaged parts.
Maintain and repair bus systems including hydraulic and electrical systems, brakes, front ends, and air conditioning.
Perform major overhauls and tune-ups of brakes and steering systems.
Perform preventative maintenance and repair of passenger lifts on coaches.
Operate buses to diagnose component issues and perform roadside or on-site repairs.
Document all work and submit logs and reports to supervisor.
