The Reg Murphy Center for Collaborative Journalism in partnership with Mercer University’s Department of Journalism and Media Studies is seeking applications for a 10-month, non-tenure track position as an Assistant Professor of Practice.
Responsibilities:
We are interested in applicants who are journalists or former journalists and can teach courses in data journalism, investigative, and audio reporting classes for students who learn to produce content for online, radio, broadcast, and print news outlets. The candidate will be expected to teach other courses in the Journalism & Media Studies program based on their background as a practitioner, but we are most interested in a candidate who could also teach courses in the areas of public relations, entrepreneurship, community engagement, and digital media. The candidate also will remain active in a professional capacity by contributing work to our in-house site, The Macon Newsroom, and other partner and professional news organizations. Additional responsibilities include advising and mentoring students and participating in University service requirements.
Qualifications:
A master’s degree in Journalism or a related discipline is required as well as at least five years of experience in a professional newsroom or media organization in which you utilized data journalism and/or audio storytelling. A candidate with specific experience in data journalism and audio reporting as well as proficiency with editing using Adobe Creative Cloud tools is strongly preferred. Candidates should have strong storytelling skills as well as excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

The Reg Murphy Center for Collaborative Journalism incorporates partnerships with the Journalism and Media Studies department as well as local media outlets to include Georgia Public Broadcasting, The Macon Melody, and 13WMAZ. The Journalism and Media Studies department has six faculty members and offers a BA in Journalism and a BA in Media Studies as well as a minor in Film Studies.
