  • Verifies orders before collection to avoid duplicate venipunctures.
  • Provides care appropriate to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients.
  • Assists in patient care during collection and handles courier duties for on-campus physicians.
  • Collects specimens at health fairs, nursing homes, and outreach sites.

Job description

Provides. clerical and receptionist services for the laboratory department. Collects blood from patient, checks quality of blood, and assumes responsibility for safety and comfort of patient, following established standards and practices.

Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of an approved phlebotomy training course, or demonstrated experience as a phlebotomist.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Keeps detailed records of all tests performed, verify physician orders by reviewing charts and notify patient and physician of any tests requiring recollection.
  • Sorts reports by physician, and fax or mail the reports to all persons authorized to receive such information. Documents all actions with the time, fax number and confirmation verification for all reports faxed. Sends a copy of Pathology and Reference Lab reports to medical records and to physicians.
  • Follows-up on any outstanding Pathology or Reference Lab test to verify if testing has been completed and if so, request that a report be sent.
  • Files all work done in the laboratory -- Pathology and Reference Lab reports.
  • Cares for and maintain supplies, equipment and work area. Requisition supplies and equipment. Alerts supervisor to defective equipment and supplies.
  • Collects blood and urine samples from patients as directed. Properly identify all patients and specimens through the use of two, unique patient identifiers and non-passive, verbal verification by patient, when possible.
  • Verifies physician orders before collection of specimens to avoid duplicate venipunctures.
  • Provides appropriate care utilizing knowledge and skill according to the age of the patient -- neonate, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric.
  • Assesses data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to age specific needs. Provides the care needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures.
  • Assists in the care of patient prior to, during, and after collection.
  • Performs courier duties for on-campus physicians.
  • Collects specimens at health fairs, nursing homes, and outreach services.
