GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK

The lifeguard is responsible for the health and safe participation of all aquatic activities. This includes supervision of bathers, facility maintenance, and administration of health care. The lifeguard is directly accountable to the Aquatics Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prevents accidents to minimize or eliminate hazardous situations.
  • Responds quickly to all emergencies in and out of the water.
  • Administers any first aid needed by the victim.
  • Communicates with other lifeguards and facility staff the need for additional assistance.
  • Observes and enforces all rules and regulations of the facility.
  • Educates patrons and informs them of the purpose for the rules and regulations. Assists parents and family in locating a missing child.
  • Completes all required records and reports as scheduled and submits them to the supervisor.
  • Performs periodical chemical checks on the pool water to maintain chemical balance.
  • Performs various duties as assigned or needed by the Aquatics Director.
  • Assists with swim lessons and swimming competitions.
  • Assists in the opening and closing of the pool area.
  • Assists in maintenance, pool cleaning, facility cleanliness, etc. in all aquatic areas.
  • Conducts oneself in a professional manner at all times.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

EDUCATION

A high school diploma or G.E.D. Preferred.

AGE RESTRICTION

Must be 16 years of age or older.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION

Must possess current Lifeguard, CPR, and standard first aid certifications.

OR

Have the ability to obtain such certifications prior to assuming the position.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Work involves lifeguarding duties, and a wide latitude of indoor and outdoor recreational activities. Requires flexible schedule with ability to adjust to day, night, holidays, and weekend work. This position is a safety-sensitive or security position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS, WORK ENVIRONMENT, REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS

This is work requiring the exertion of up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. At times, this position may require heavy lifting of 75+ lbs.

Work requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required; visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.

The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, heat, humidity, adverse weather conditions, noise, and hazards.

It shall be the responsibility of the JFFC Director to assess the type(s) of reasonable accommodations which may be necessary to allow the individual to perform the essential functions of this role and to provide such necessary reasonable accommodations to a qualified individual with a disability, provided that nothing herein shall be construed to require the provision of reasonable accommodations if doing so will impose an undue hardship on the employing agency or a direct threat to the safety of himself/herself or others.
