Job summary

Nooksack Indian Tribe is seeking a Regular Full Time Custodian to perform manual custodial services, cleaning and sanitizing tribal buildings and facilities under the supervision of the Facilities & Maintenance Manager.

You will clean bathrooms, floors, windows, and common areas, stock supplies, and report repair needs. The job requires reading and following instructions, the ability to work independently at a remote site, and a commitment to safety and customer service.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and materials.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English.
  • Must pass alcohol/drug test at time of hire and throughout employment.
  • Ability to operate and maintain cleaning equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and disinfect bathrooms and break areas; mop floors; restock dispensers.
  • Sweep, wax, and polish floors; vacuum carpets; dust furniture.
  • Collect and empty trash; clean disposal containers.
  • Clean mirrors, blinds, fixtures, windows and walls.
  • Follow chemical safety guidelines; use cleaning agents as directed.
  • Maintain supplies and report low stock.
  • Provide courteous customer service to clients and staff.
  • Report repair needs to supervisor.

Reports To: Facilities & Maintenance Manager

Job Status: Regular Full Time

Type: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Grade: A

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direct supervision of the Facilities and Maintenance Manager, performs manual custodial services in the cleaning and sanitation of the Nooksack Tribal buildings and facilities.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Cleans and disinfects bathrooms and employee break areas, cleans and disinfects sinks, toilets, cleans mirrors, sweep and mop floors, check all dispensers (soap, paper towel, and toilet paper), empties trash.
  • Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes, and polishes floors; vacuums and shampoos carpets; dust and polishes furniture.
  • Collects and empties wastebaskets; cleans trash disposal containers (as needed).
  • Cleans mirrors, venetian blinds, light fixtures, window, doors, and walls.
  • Follows instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies. Use as directed.
  • Dust office furniture and equipment replacing to original settings when finished.
  • Practice excellent customer service skills at all times to include, but not limited to addressing clients and employee needs courteously and promptly.
  • Ensure that necessary supplies are available and reports to supervisor when supplies are low for timely ordering.
  • Makes list and forwards to supervisor of repairs that are needed to facilities, equipment, carpets, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualifications are required for the incumbent to have, in order to be considered for the position.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION:
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma.
REQUIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES POSITION:
  • Working knowledge methods, materials, tools and standard practices of cleaning and maintain buildings.
  • Knowledge of preparation, use and disposal of chemical cleaning agents.
  • Ability to establish work priorities and assign work orders, materials, staff, equipment and other resources for timely completion of tasks.
  • Ability to operate, maintain and perform minor repairs to powered custodial equipment including, but not limited to, vacuums, buffers, carpet cleaner.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and or written instructions
  • Ability to train employees in the safe and efficient use of all cleaning equipment and supplies required for completion of work assignments.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English.
  • Ability to operate hand cleaning equipment including but not limited to brooms, dust, wet mops, squeegees, hand vacuums, dust pans and dusters. Ability to work independently at a remote site.
REQUIRED CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must pass alcohol/drug test at time of hire and throughout employment.
  • Must pass criminal background check at time of hire and periodically thereafter.
REQUIRED LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Must have and maintain throughout employment a valid Washington State Driver’s License and meet the insurability requirements of the Tribe (Driving Abstract Required at time of hire).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

(The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.):

  • Sufficient clarity of hearing, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, telephones, and safety warnings.
  • Sufficient vision or other powers to observation, which permits the employee to distinguish dirt or marks on surfaces and move through unfamiliar buildings and rooms.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity which permits the employee to operate a variety of cleaning devices including powered equipment, hand equipment and small objects, and to make adjustments to equipment.
  • Sufficient strength to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds for varying distances, maneuver powered cleaning equipment such as vacuums and scrubbers, stand for periods of time up to three to four hours and to adapt to and move between work stations and job tasks.
  • Sufficient body flexibility to balance to perform cleaning operations which require repeated bending and stooping motions, including climbing and working on ladders.
  • Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes which permit employee to work in areas with only artificial light, to work within a tightly enclosed areas such as closets and small offices, and to work while exposed to unpleasant odors and with allergenic substances such as cleaning solutions and dust.
  • The primary duties are performed indoors and include the use to electrically powered cleaning equipment and cleaning substances that may involve related hazards.

The following qualifications are preferred/helpful for the incumbent who has these skills/knowledge or abilities for this position.

  • Prefer 1 year of experience.
