Job summary

City of Weslaco is seeking a jailer to oversee the operation of the municipal jail, including intake, detention, and release, while ensuring the wellbeing of incarcerated individuals in compliance with department regulations.

Position requires high school diploma or GED, 1–3 years of related experience, and ability to pass background checks and a drug screen. A valid Class C license and Emergency Management training within 3 months are also required.

  • Monitor prisoners to ensure safety.
  • May be required to work beyond normal hours, including nights and weekends.

Job Summary

The jailer is responsible for the operation of the City\'s jail, the physical intake, detention, release and the well-being of all individuals that are incarcerated in the facility in accordance with Department regulations. Employee is required to perform all similar or related duties.


The jailer is responsible for the operation of the City\'s jail, the physical intake, detention, release and the well-being of all individuals that are incarcerated in the facility in accordance with Department regulations. Employee is required to perform all similar or related duties.


Essential Job Functions


  • Maintain regular and prompt attendance; physically present to work.

  • Responsible for the well-being of all individuals who are incarcerated at the City\'s jail facility.

  • Responsible for the physical intake, removal of personal items, detention and release of prisoners including booking, photographing, and fingerprinting each individual; checks the criminal history of all prisoners including whether there are any outstanding warrants.

  • Responsible for getting prisoners to court for their arraignment as well as their transportation and feeding; completes an arrest form.

  • Monitors all prisoners on a regular basis to ensure their safety.

  • Performs other similar or related duties as assigned

  • Employee may be required to work beyond normal business hours at night and/or on weekends


Minimum Qualifications & Requirements


  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Applicant must pass pre-employment background check and drug screen at City\'s expense.

  • Applicant must have a current valid class \"C\" driver's license and be insurable.

  • Must successfully complete Emergency Management and Incident Command Training within first three months upon hire.

  • Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred


Knowledgeable, Skills And Abilities


  • Knowledgeable of state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of a municipal jail facility. Knowledge of Police Department services.

  • Ability to carry out duties during emergency situations under stressful, life-threatening conditions. Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records. Ability to deal with disgruntled members of the public in a tactful manner. Ability to execute and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Proficient oral and written communication skills. Proficient physical skills to be able to protect oneself and others. Common sense skill to determine the most appropriate response to emergency situations.


Working Conditions/Physical Demands


  • Work requires employee physically present, and on time, as scheduled, and involves frequent and recurring assignments requiring strenuous effort and endurance or quick reflexes to perform the work or the potential need to subdue people while being incarcerated or housed at the jail.

  • Duties may involve assignments requiring application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination.

  • Employee is routinely required to read general documents for general understanding and routinely for analytical purposes.
