Job description

Coryell County Sheriff's Department is accepting applications for full time Jailers.

SUMMARY

This position requires a thorough knowledge of jail procedures. Has daily contact with the public and is for the general supervision of inmates assigned to the jailers' duty station. Is responsible for the preparation of incident reports, booking data and other related reports. This individual is responsible for the security and safety of the staff, inmates and facility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Booking incoming and outgoing inmates
  • Feeding inmates
  • Supervising the daily cleaning of the facility
  • Maintaining jail security
  • Processing of incoming and outgoing inmates
  • Classifying inmates as required
  • Taking fingerprints
  • Moving inmates throughout the facility
  • Writing incident reports
  • Handling violent inmates, to include physical confrontations
  • Handling intoxicated and/or inmates under the influence of drugs or other substances
  • Handling mentally ill inmates
  • Observing suicidal inmates and respond to suicide attempts and medical emergencies
  • Responding to fire alarms/fight fires and evacuate inmates in a safe and secure manner
MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience; High school diploma or GED is required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations; Within one year of employment, certification as a Jailer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education is required.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Language Skills; Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence and memos. Ability to write correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in small groups to others.

Mathematical Skills; Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability; Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move heavy objects. Specific vision abilities required by thie job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Must be physically fit and pass a physical exam by a medical doctor. In order to meet the physical demands of the job (handling of violent inmates, etc.) must have full use of extremities.
