Job summary

The City of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is seeking a Detention Officer to provide security, safety, care and control of inmates in the city jail and to support jail operations.

Responsibilities include enforcing jail rules, processing new inmates, performing bookings and fingerprinting, conducting headcounts, distributing medications, and coordinating housing and escorts while upholding professional standards and departmental policies.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; no previous experience required; some public relations experience in a similar jail or law enforcement environment preferred.
• Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver’s license; at least 18 years old; U.S. citizen; pass NCIC, Basic Jail Officer, Juvenile Specifics, Firearm qualification, basic first-aid and FEMA NIMS.
• Must be trained in CPR; may be required to attain and maintain other related certifications.

Responsibilities

• Enforces jail rules and maintains safety and security for the public, staff and inmates; escorts inmates as needed.
• Receives and processes inmates; conducts bookings, fingerprint records, and NCIC background checks.
• Determines housing classifications; supervises inmate movement and participation in meals, visits and medical calls.
• Monitors inmate activities, conducts headcounts, and distributes medications as prescribed.
• Performs court-related duties, transports inmates as required, and maintains logs and incident reports.
