This is a full-time position with Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office and includes optional benefits such as health, dental insurance, paid sick/vacation/holiday time, along with retirement, death and disability benefits with the Virginia Retirement System.
This is a Nonexempt position with an annual salary range between $36,653.88 and $42,817.48 dependent on qualifications.
The Jail Cook position involves preparing and serving meals to inmates in a correctional facility, while also supervising inmate workers, ensuring sanitation, and fulfilling other duties. Responsibilities include cooking meals using commercial equipment, assisting with food preparation, cleaning, and fulfilling basic sanitation tasks.
Key Responsibilities of a Jail Correctional Cook:
- Food Preparation: Cooking and serving meals to inmates, often in large quantities.
- Supervision: Overseeing inmate workers who assist with food preparation.
- Sanitation: Maintaining a clean and sanitary kitchen environment.
- Inventory and Ordering: Assisting with ordering food and kitchen supplies, as well as maintaining inventory.
- Record Keeping: Preparing reports and maintaining records related to food service.
- Compliance: Following food safety regulations and sanitation procedures.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Cooking: Working knowledge of preparing food in quantity, kitchen sanitation, and food storage.
- Supervisory Skills: Ability to supervise and direct the work of others.
- Communication Skills: Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Experience: Some prior experience in the food service industry, especially in an institutional or large commercial setting, is often preferred.
- Food Safety: Knowledge of safe food handling procedures and sanitation practices.
- Ability to obtain and keep Virginia Department of Health Certified Food Protection Handler / Manager and any other Certification(s) that may be needed to perform job.
All applicants must meet the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office minimum requirements for appointment and consideration:
- Civilian Support Staff must have a legal right to work in the United States.
- Be 21 years of age for Deputy Sheriff, 18 years of age for Civilian Support Staff.
- Have a high school education or have passed the General Educational Development exam (GED).
- Possess a valid Virginia driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle.
- Must submit to oral panel interview.
- Must submit to a polygraph examination.
- Undergo a background investigation including fingerprint-based criminal history records inquiries to both the Central Criminal Records exchange and the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
- Not having been convicted of or pleaded guilty or no contest to a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Virginia.
- Undergo a physical examination conducted under the supervision of a licensed physician after a conditional offer of employment.
- Not to have produced a positive result on a pre-employment drug screening after a conditional offer of employment.
