Job summary

HDR is seeking an ITS/Traffic Designer - EIT to contribute to ITS and traffic management system projects. You will assist senior engineers in design, planning, engineering, and deployment across several locations in the United States including Virginia and Maryland.

The role involves developing PS&E packages, system analyses, and operational procedures. Candidates should be technically versatile with strong software skills and a commitment to project management activities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil or electrical engineering or related field.
• EIT certificate; candidates hired without their EIT will be titled ITS Designer and must obtain EIT for career progression.
• Local candidates preferred.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, Synchro/Sim Traffic, HCS, AutoCAD and MicroStation.

Responsibilities

• Work on ITS and traffic management system projects under project managers and senior engineers.
• Develop plans, PS&E design packages for freeway, arterial and transit ITS systems.
• Develop System Engineering Analyses, ITS Architectures, and Master Plans.
• Update and review design documents, technical specifications and related documentation.
• Participate in ACES vehicle, Electrified Mobility, and emerging tech projects.
• Perform other duties as needed.

Job Overview

In the role of ITS/Traffic Designer / EIT at HDR, you will work on ITS and traffic management system projects under the direction of project managers and senior engineers. Your responsibilities will include design, planning, engineering, integration, deployment, operations and maintenance, communications, and overall project management.

Responsibilities

• Work on projects under the direction of the project manager and senior engineers, focusing on ITS and traffic management system projects including Design, Planning, Engineering, Integration, Deployment, Operations and Maintenance, Communications, and overall Contract and Project Management.
• Develop plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) design packages for freeway, arterial and transit ITS systems, covering fiber optic and wireless communication systems, power distribution systems, CCTV, DMS, vehicle detection systems, HAR, RWIS, traffic signal interconnect, transit signal priority, lightning control systems, and other ITS technologies and sub‑systems such as freeway open‑road tolling and managed lane technologies.
• Develop System Engineering Analyses, ITS Architectures, Concept of Operations, ITS and TSM&O Master Plans, Traffic Management Center Standard Operational Procedures and Performance Measures Guidelines, ITS design plans, ITS equipment specifications, and subsequent testing, operations and maintenance activities.
• Develop, update and review design documents, technical specifications and other project‑related documentation.
• Participate in Automated Connected Electric and Shared (ACES) vehicle, Electrified Mobility, and emerging technology projects.
• Perform other duties as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil or electrical engineering or a related engineering field.
• Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate; candidates hired without their EIT will be titled "ITS Designer" and will be expected to obtain their EIT for career progression.
• Local candidates preferred.
• Computer skills using Microsoft Office, Synchro/Sim Traffic, HCS, AutoCAD and MicroStation.

Required Qualifications

• Ability to multitask while working on many projects at once.
