Job summary

Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. (GPI) seeks an ITS Field Operations Technician to support the JTMC and NYSDOT efforts across the NYC metro area.

The role focuses on monitoring ITS assets, reliable field performance, and incident verification to ensure traveler information and traffic management systems run smoothly. The position requires night shifts (10 PM–6 AM), field inspections, and close collaboration with agency staff.

GPI is seeking an ITS Field Operations Technician to support the New York State Department of Transportation's Joint Transportation Management Center (JTMC). In this highly visible role, you will serve as the field representative for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) infrastructure throughout the New York City metropolitan area, helping ensure critical transportation technology remains operational, reliable, and responsive to the needs of the traveling public.

What You'll Do:

As an ITS Field Operations Technician, you will play a key role in monitoring, inspecting, and supporting transportation technology assets throughout the region.

  • Field Operations Support - Night Shift 10 PM to 6 AM.
  • Conduct daytime and nighttime drive‑by inspections of ITS equipment and infrastructure.
  • Verify the appearance, readability, and illumination of Variable Message Signs (VMS).
  • Identify equipment deficiencies and operational issues and report findings to project leadership.
  • Prepare monthly inspection reports documenting asset conditions and performance.
  • Maintain inventories of ITS field assets used for traffic management and traveler information services.
  • Respond to roadway incidents and provide field verification when events are not visible through traffic cameras.
  • Assist NYSDOT and JTMC staff with field investigations, surveys, and special operational requests.
  • Travel throughout the NYC metropolitan region in support of transportation operations.
  • T echnical & Maintenance Support
  • Monitor ITS maintenance activities to ensure timely completion and quality performance.
  • Track and follow up on trouble tickets, work orders, invoices, and operational documentation.
  • R eview maintenance and construction activities affecting ITS infrastructure.
  • Verify completed work meets operational requirements and quality standards.
  • I nvestigate and document damage to ITS assets resulting from vehicle crashes or other incidents to support cost recovery efforts.
What We're Looking For:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Night Shift 10 PM to 6 AM
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to travel throughout the NYC metropolitan area.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather, roadway, and traffic conditions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and computer-based applications.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting transportation operations, traffic management, infrastructure maintenance, or related field services.
  • Familiarity with Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment and field technologies.
  • Knowledge of the New York City transportation network.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with agency personnel, contractors, and stakeholders.
Requirements
  • Maintain a valid driver's license with a clean motor vehicle report (MVR) for final consideration
  • Read, write, and understand plans and directions given in the English language
  • Basic computer skills with the ability to create and edit Microsoft Word and Excel documents, create Outlook emails and utilize SharePoint and Microsoft Teams to communicate with other team members
  • Able to traverse a construction job site consisting of uneven ground varying in height and consistency of material, with a variation of elevation 19" or less (mud, gravel, rutted ground, etc.)
  • Able to climb and leave a ladder to a platform varying from 6' to 20' r
  • Able to wear GPI required PPE, i.e., hard hats, safety vest, work boots, and/or safety glasses/goggles while working
  • Able to move equipment or inspection specimens weighing up to 50 pounds
