Job summary

Neel-Schaffer, Inc. is seeking an ITS Engineer Intern based in Nashville or Murfreesboro, Tennessee. This role will support the growth of our Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) practice while gaining hands-on experience with emerging technologies.

The intern will collaborate on impactful projects and contribute to planning, design, and implementation of transportation systems. A Bachelor's degree in a related field and 0-2+ years of experience are required.

Qualifications

  • 0–2+ years of relevant ITS or transportation engineering experience.
  • EIT certification or PE licensure or ability to obtain within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Familiarity with TDOT standards and transportation agency processes.

Responsibilities

  • Support the planning, design, and implementation of ITS and transportation systems projects.
  • Assist with preparation of plans, specifications, cost estimates, and technical reports.
  • Coordinate with DOT clients, municipalities, vendors, and internal project teams.

Neel‑Schaffer is accepting applications from qualified candidates for an ITS Engineer Intern to support the continued growth of our Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) practice. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to impactful transportation projects for state and local agency clients while gaining hands‑on experience with emerging ITS technologies.

The position, which can be based in Nashville or Murfreesboro (TN), also provides a clear pathway for long-term career development within a collaborative, multidisciplinary engineering firm.

Responsibilities
  • Support the planning, design, and implementation of ITS and transportation systems projects.
  • Assist with preparation of plans, specifications, cost estimates, and technical reports.
  • Support systems engineering documentation, including concepts of operations and requirements.
  • Coordinate with DOT clients, municipalities, vendors, and internal project teams.
  • Assist with traffic operations analysis, system integration, and device selection.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (preferred), Electrical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related field.
  • 0–2+ years of relevant ITS or transportation engineering experience.
  • EIT certification or PE licensure or ability to obtain within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Experience with ITS infrastructure such as traffic signal systems, detection, CCTV DMS, communications, or traffic management systems.
  • Familiarity with TDOT standards and transportation agency processes.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with MicroStation, Wireless Analysis Tools, similar tools is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team oriented environment.
  • Willing to work in office and field conditions.
