Job summary

Limestone County Board of Education seeks an ITINERANT SPECIAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT to support the primary instructor, helping students with disabilities meet daily objectives and participate in educational programs. Under supervision, you will reinforce learning, implement behavior plans, and assist with therapy-related activities in various settings.

Responsibilities

  • Under certified teacher supervision, perform instructional tasks.
  • Work with identified students to reinforce learning and behavior plans.
  • Assist with small groups and relay teacher-guided instruction.
  • Support therapy activities prescribed by specialists.
  • Prepare instructional materials and assist with clerical duties.
  • Help supervise students during meals, recess, and field trips.
  • Assist with transporting and assisting students between settings as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Title: ITINERANT SPECIAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT

Supervised by/Reports to: Principal/Director of Special Education

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Job Goals:

  1. As a Special Education Instructional Aide, you will facilitate the primary instructor in meeting his or her daily objectives.
  2. To assist school personnel in implementing an effective educational program for students with disabilities to address their personal, social, behavioral, functional, and academic goals.

Qualifications:

  1. An Associate Degree preferred.
  2. Two years of higher education and successful passage of the Work Keys Test, required.
  3. Prior working with students with disabilities preferred.
  • Able to manage dependent students, if needed.
  • Knowledge understanding of academic and behavioral strategies and techniques to students in learning.
  • Word processing/ computer experience.
  • Good with strong interpersonal skills.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  1. Under the direction of a certified teacher, performs tasks related to instruction.
  2. Works with the identified student(s) to maintain behavioral control and implement plans, if needed.
  3. Works with small groups of to reinforce learning initially introduced by the teacher.
  4. Guides study and corrective instruction directed by the teacher.
  5. Assists teacher in implementing activities prescribed by the speech/occupational/physical therapist.
  6. Assists students who need special attention and/or assistance.
  7. Assists teacher in preparing instructional materials for classroom use.
  8. Assists routine classroom clerical duties such as grading papers.
  9. Assists teacher in feeding, positioning, lifting, or moving students, if needed.
  10. Assists students with wash‑up and toilet routines, including cleaning and changing, if needed.
  11. Assists students and/or teachers with the use of assistive /adaptive devices, if needed.
  12. Assists in supervision of students who participate in special or general education class.
  13. Helps with extra duties related to the supervision of students - lunch periods, playground, study hall, cafeteria, bus duties, assemblies, field trips, etc.
  14. Accompanies children to and from special education setting and to regular classroom setting as needed.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger dexterity, to handle, or feel objects, equipment, or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, squat, and crouch and kneel. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull carry and/or move to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include near vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
