Job summary

Indianapolis Public Schools is seeking a qualified Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to travel among IPS schools to provide direct and consultative special education services.

The position serves students aged 3 through 22, housed at the Ed Center with travel across IPS and non-public sites. A Bachelor's is required, a Master's preferred, Indiana license required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree preferred.
• Valid Indiana license to teach Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
• Indiana Elementary Education (K-6) license required.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct instruction and support for DHH students across educational settings.
• Collaborate with classroom teachers to modify and accommodate IEP goals.
• Encourage students to participate using their sign system or primary communication mode.
• Plan and document development of effective friendships and social relationships.
• Utilize progress monitoring toward IEP goals.
• Demonstrate use of evidence-based instructional strategies.
• Monitor use and care of equipment and materials.
• Develop individual activity adjustments and behavior plans as needed.
• Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding records.
• Conduct case conferences, write goals and timelines.
• Demonstrate knowledge of special education law.
• Perform Teacher of Record duties as outlined in Article 7.

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) travels to the students’ assigned schools and/or community sites to provide direct and/or consultative special education services relating to hearing loss. These services (academic and social skills using various methods of communication to receive and convey language) enable the students to learn in a variety of settings. The students range in age from 3 through 22 and may have only hearing loss or additional disabilities, including cognitive, other sensory loss, physical, and/or behavioral. This specific position will be housed out of the Ed Center, located at 120 E. Walnut St, but will require travel, as needed, to assigned Indianapolis Public Schools and Non-Public schools located throughout Indianapolis.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provide direct instruction, modeling and support of DHH students across educational settings.
2. Collaborate with classroom teachers to develop appropriate modifications and accommodations for DHH students in accordance with the IEP.
3. Encourage students to participate through their preferred manual sign system or primary mode of communication in classroom learning experiences in order to ensure comprehension of subject manner.
4. Plan, teach, support and document the development of effective friendships and social relationships.
5. Utilize an assessment system for progress monitoring student achievement toward IEP goals.
6. Demonstrate use of scientifically-based research best practice instructional strategies.
7. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment and materials.
8. Develop, provide and implement appropriate individual student activity adjustments and assist in the development of behavior intervention plans as needed.
9. Communicate regularly with parents regarding their student’s progress, including contact with parents by weekly folder, note, e-mail or phone call.
10. Maintain confidentiality regarding records and information.
11. Conducts case conferences, writes goals and maintain timelines.
12. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of special education law.
13. Perform the duties of Teacher of Record as outlined in Article 7.
14. Other duties may be assigned.

EDUCATION

LICENSE: Must hold a valid Indiana State Teacher's License in Elementary Education (K-6).

Must be deemed Highly Qualified in accordance with the Indiana Department of Education
