Job summary

Lewis County Schools seeks a Custodian/Maintenance for the 2026-2027 school year as a surge position. 245 days prorated to the year, located at Lewis County Schools, with duties including cleaning cafeterias, restrooms, classrooms and other areas, plus minor maintenance and supply management.

Requirements include being 18+, a High School diploma or equivalent, criminal background check, and passing the State Custodial & Maintenance Competency Exams.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5.
• Criminal Background check pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c.
• Applicants must take and pass the State Custodial & Maintenance Competency Exams.

Responsibilities

• Clean cafeteria, restrooms, classrooms and/or other areas as assigned.
• Maintain a daily/weekly work schedule that ensures buildings and grounds are clean and sanitary.
• Make minor maintenance repairs.
• Maintain supplies needed for assigned work space.
• Work safely using proper body mechanics and lifting techniques.
• Clean and wash floors, walls and ceilings; dust and polish furniture; wash windows; strip, spray, buff, polish and wax floors; wash and clean restrooms; remove trash and furnishings as assigned.
• Snow removal and/or mowing & weed eating duties as assigned.
• Perform any and all job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: As per state code 18A-4-8 and county regulations, those presently employed or on the Substitute Custodian List will be given preference (18A-4-8b)

REQUIREMENTS:

*Must be 18 years of age, or older

*High School diploma, or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5

*Criminal Background check pursuant to WV Code § 18-5-15c

*Applicants must take and pass the State Custodial & Maintenance Competency Exams

JOB DUTIES & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• This position will frequently require the employee to crawl, sit, stoop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, grasp, talk, hear, see and use repetitive motions.
• This position will require lifting and moving.
• Clean cafeteria, restrooms, classrooms and/or other areas as assigned.
• Assigned areas should be free of debris and grounds clean.
• Make minor, maintenance repairs.
• Maintain a daily/weekly work scheduled that ensures the buildings and grounds are clean and in sanitary condition.
• Submit any problem areas within the building and/or grounds that are in need of repair. This could include problems with equipment, cleaning, sanitation, or pest control.
• Maintain supplies needed for assigned work space.
• Works safely using proper body mechanics and lifting techniques to reduce risk of injury to self and/or co-workers.
• Must be able to clean & wash floors, walls and ceilings; dust and polish furniture; wash windows; strip, spray, buff, polish and wax floors; wash and clean restrooms; remove trash and furnishings as assigned.
• Snow removaland/or mowing & weed eating duties as assigned
• Maintain positive work habits.
• Perform any and all job-related duties as assigned

TERM: 245 days (prorate for the 2026-2027 school year)

SALARY: As Provided in West Virginia Code 18A-4-8 and 18A-4-8a
