Job summary

State of Alaska’s Department of Family & Community Services is seeking an IT System Administrator 2 to ensure reliable operation of enterprise services such as Azure, Power Platform, SQL Server, web servers, and SharePoint Online. The role requires collaboration with multiple IT teams and may involve enhancements to in-house applications through the SDLC.

Qualifications

  • Experience or training in database, network, or system administration.
  • Ability to analyze and implement enterprise IT architectures.
  • Knowledge of software engineering lifecycle and methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Azure cloud services and SQL Server is helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure reliable operation and support of enterprise services including Azure, Power Platform, SQL servers, web servers, and SharePoint Online.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and communicate on software solutions and enhancements.
  • Contribute to in-house application development using the software development lifecycle.
  • Coordinate with IT teams (Network/Business Applications/PMO/DSO) to maintain security and operations.
  • Occasional travel within Alaska (1–2 trips per year, 1–3 days each).

Administrator 2 in Anchorage!

This position is open to Alaska Residents only.

What You Will Be Doing:

This position is responsible for ensuring reliable operation and support of department wide enterprise services including Azure services, Power Platform, SQL servers, web servers, and SharePoint Online. In addition, the incumbent may work on a variety of vendor developed software solutions requiring communication with various stakeholders. Additional work could include enhancement of in-house developed applications using the software development lifecycle.

The mission of the Department of Family and Community Services is "To provide support, safety, and personal well-being for vulnerable Alaskans.” The IT/CS section of DFCS works as a team with Network Services (NS), Business Applications (BA), Project Management Office (PMO), and the Department Security Office (DSO) to keep the department technologically operational and secure.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

This position's primary workplace is in-person at the Frontier Building in Anchorage, offering several nearby restaurants and coffee shops. DFCS is a dynamic enterprise consisting of a team that is a diverse, highly technical, and collaborative group which embraces, implements, and supports the latest technologies to provide the best operational capabilities and resources to DFCS. Position requires travel within the State (normally one to two trips per year of 1 to up to 3 days length. We are customer focused and project oriented.

Database Administration

: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools for automating, developing, implementing, or administering database systems.

Enterprise Architecture:

Knowledge of principles, concepts, and methods of enterprise architecture to align information technology (IT) strategy, plans, and systems with the mission, goals, structure, and processes of the organization.

Software Engineering:

Knowledge of software engineering design and development methodologies, paradigms, and tools; the software life cycle; software reusability; and software reliability metrics.

Equivalent to those typically gained by:

Training in computer science, information technology, system administration, or a similar field and professional experience in database, network, or system administration.

Special Note:

“Competencies” means a combination of interrelated knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that enable a person to act effectively in a job or situation.

“Typically gained by” means the prevalent, usual method of gaining the competencies expected for entry into the job.

“Training” means the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction. It includes instruction through formal and informal methods (such as classroom, on-line, self-study, and on-the-job), from accredited and unaccredited sources, and long-duration (such as a post-secondary degree) and short-duration (such as a seminar) programs.
