Job description

Our client is seeking a motivated Security Engineer with practical security skills, strong curiosity, and the initiative to investigate and solve unfamiliar problems. The role supports SOC automation, cloud security, OT/IoT and transportation-connected systems, and application security. This is a several year hourly paid contract. Passion and a drive to succeed is key!

The manager provides objectives; this person determines the approach, researches options, tests solutions, troubleshoots issues, and follows through. Relevant hands-on experience may come from employment, home labs, or independent projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Build scripts and security workflows to improve alert investigation, enrichment, triage, and response.
• Help improve cloud logging, monitoring, access controls, and secure configurations.
• Investigate and help secure connected devices and their network communications, including CCTV, sensors, and transportation systems.
• Work with Application and DevOps teams on application and deployment security concerns.
• Research unfamiliar issues, recommend practical solutions, coordinate and validate changes, and document findings and results.

Required Skills

• Demonstrated initiative and interest in cybersecurity, supported by examples of independently investigating, building, testing, or improving something.
• Ability to turn a broad objective into a practical plan and complete work without continuous step-by-step direction, while asking focused questions and coordinating when needed.
• Some hands-on security experience through work, home labs, or independent projects, with the ability to explain personal actions and results.
• Working knowledge of networking and security fundamentals, including IP addresses, ports, DNS, access controls, and logs.
• Basic scripting or automation ability, with evidence of using or modifying scripts to solve a practical problem.
• Strong troubleshooting skills, willingness to learn unfamiliar technology, and ability to communicate and document findings clearly.

Desired Skills

Experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred. Expertise across every area is not expected.

• SOC automation: SIEM/SOAR tools, alert tuning, response playbooks, API integrations, or security scripting.
• Cloud security: Azure, AWS, or GCP access controls, security logging, monitoring, and configuration reviews.
• OT/IoT and ITS/CPS: device hardening, network segmentation, firewall rules, or traffic analysis. Comparable IT device-security experience is relevant; direct CCTV or transportation experience is not required.
• Application security and engineering: secure coding, API security, authentication and authorization, vulnerability investigation, or security checks in development workflows.
