IT Infrastructure Technology Designer

Senior Consultant I

A Senior Consultant I (Technology Designer) at Thinkbox Technology Group is a professional who possesses the typical low-voltage infrastructure designer skill sets while acquainted with modern IT project management methodologies. This role will focus on facilitating the completion of the design of technology systems, including voice, data, structured cabling, OSP, ISP, and other low-voltage systems. This role will also integrate and liaise with project management groups to plan, organize, and integrate cross-functional IT initiatives, specifically: networking, switching, A/V, manufacturing equipment, laboratory equipment, medical devices etc. Depending on the type of building in the design scope.

This will consist of frequent domestic travel as per clients demands. The role calls for great communication and analytical skills, with the ability to bridge the gap between the business and IT infrastructure teams.

Job Responsibilities:

Technical Design & Consulting:

  • Sufficient proficiency in the following suite of technologies to hold conversations with experts, identify actions in meetings, and articulate meaningful updates to clients using the appropriate technical terminology:
    • Voice and Data Networks
    • Building Automation
    • Audio Visual system and Sound Masking
    • CCTV and Access Control systems
    • Medical and Lab equipment
    • Manufacturing equipment
  • Proficient in preparing designs for technology systems, including voice, data, structured cabling (horizontal and vertical for both ISP and OSP), and other low-voltage systems.
  • Coordinate system scope, design layout, and drawings with the client and other disciplines.
  • Perform site visits for documentation of existing systems and buildings conditions.
  • Effective communication skills with a team-oriented attitude.
  • Perform telecommunications, IT, and low voltage systems analysis and develop appropriate system concepts, layouts, and details.
  • Document construction drawings with design concepts suitable for plan check, bidding, and construction.
  • Oversee projects from inception through final transition working with senior management, clients, and subcontractors ensuring full control over the schedule, cost, and scope.
  • Proven ability to resolve complex design problems.
  • Prepare technical specifications for division 27 using CSI formatting.
  • Review and evaluate shop drawings and product submittals. Expert in responding to RFIs throughout the project life cycle using tools like Procore, E-builder, or others.
  • Visit construction sites to inspect work in progress or completed, and prepare detailed findings reports with remediations recommendations.
  • Responsible for research on modern technical concepts and methodologies to present to clients and mentor teams.
  • Responsible for interpreting technical into business-level/user-level terminology to streamline communication.

Project control:

  • Manage project scope to ensure projects deliver on the timeline, quality, and budget.
  • Evaluate all key project deliverables and final products to ensure traceability of requirements, high quality, and client acceptance. Responsible for formal sign-off on all project deliverables; this will often include coordinating input and involvement from the account director and client.
  • Where project control is in jeopardy, create contingency plans with appropriate input from key team members and implement a revised project schedule, scope, or budget in a timely manner.

Project communication:

  • Work with the account director to ensure clients achieve an understanding of expectations, deliverables, dependencies, risks, and progress.
  • If needed, create customized reporting for the client or team with account management and/or team leads, to obtain sign-off on deliverables or documentation.
  • Use sound judgment in all project communication and ensure that key stakeholders including the team, client, and management are apprised of project activities in a timely manner.
  • Communicate progress, risks, expectations, timelines, milestones, and other key project metrics to clients and team members.

Client management:

  • Continually seeks opportunities to increase customer satisfaction and deepen client relationships.
  • Build a knowledge base of each clients business, organization, and objectives.
  • Manage day-to-day client interaction.
  • Set and manage client expectations.
  • Develop lasting relationships with client personnel that foster client ties.
  • Communicate effectively with clients to identify needs and evaluate alternative business solutions.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • This position has training responsibilities. Sr. Consultant I is responsible for training and developing team members assigned to projects they are supporting or managing.
  • Sr. Consultant I may be asked to perform additional assignments and responsibilities as assumed or requested by management.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position. The Senior Consultant I work a standard work week but may be required to work evenings and weekends to monitor program activities and participate in cutovers or other project efforts.

Travel:

Travel will be based on project needs. The position is primarily remote working from the employees home office during the business day; however, up to 50% out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected depending on the project/client/company needs.

Experience and Education:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience designing, estimating, and implementing medium to large-scale cabling and network infrastructure.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in project management (as a project manager or project engineer role) for facilities or infrastructure teams.
  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent is highly .
  • RCDD Certification is required.
  • PMP Certification or equivalent is desired but not required.

Required Technical Knowledge:

  • RCDD in good standing.
  • Other industry certificates like OSP, NTS, CCDA, CCNA, CTS, and CTS-D are a plus.
  • Solid working knowledge of Structured Cabling Systems from an installation and design perspective.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 suite is required, including creating diagrams in Visio.
  • Proficient in Bluebeam software to markup design drawings.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Revit is a plus but not required.
  • Knowledge of NEC code, IEEE, EIA, TIA, industry standards, and other applicable codes related to the design and layout of IT, low voltage, and telecommunications systems.
  • May need to obtain entry-level technical certification(s) at the clients request for emerging technologies.
