Job summary

Whitaker Construction seeks an entry-level Help Desk Technician to be the first point of contact for IT issues across the company. You will support computers, mobile devices, printers, software, and network connectivity, and help resolve tickets promptly.

The role offers opportunities to grow into Desktop, Application, Network, and Server support as you gain experience, aligning with our emphasis on safety and ownership within a family-owned ESOP environment.

Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field.
  • Equivalents accepted (education + experience).
  • IT certs such as CompTIA A+, Network+, or Microsoft Fundamentals are a plus.
  • Experience with IT help desk software and remote desktop tools is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Active Directory, Group Policy, and enterprise IT environments.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for computers, mobile devices, printers, software, and network connectivity.
  • Respond to help desk tickets, calls, and emails with timely resolutions.
  • Troubleshoot hardware, software, and basic network issues for office and field staff.
  • Install and maintain Windows devices, mobile devices, and business apps.
  • Assist with user account management (AD, Microsoft 365, security perms).
  • Educate employees on cybersecurity best practices.
  • Document troubleshooting steps in the IT knowledge base.
  • Collaborate with senior IT staff on networking and server topics.

Job description

The Help Desk Technician serves as the first point of contact for IT-related issues within Whitaker Construction, providing technical support to business users, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and assisting with system administration tasks as needed. This is an entry-level position, and the successful candidate will be expected to grow into Desktop Support, Application Support, Network Support, and Server Support roles over time.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support for computers, mobile devices, printers, software applications, and network connectivity.
  • Respond to help desk tickets, phone calls, and emails, ensuring timely resolution.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and basic network issues for employees in office and field environments.
  • Install, configure, and maintain Windows devices, mobile devices, and business-critical applications.
  • Assist with user account management, including Active Directory, Microsoft 365, and security permissions.
  • Support Microsoft 365 applications, including Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint.
  • Educate employees on best practices for cybersecurity, data protection, and IT procedures.
  • Assist in the setup of new employee workstations and ensure proper IT onboarding.
  • Document troubleshooting steps and solutions in the IT knowledge base.
  • Work alongside senior IT staff to gain exposure to networking, server management, and cloud administration.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and recommend improvements to IT processes.
  • Comply with all safety policies, procedures, and standards of safety.
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned by supervisors.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • IT certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, or Microsoft Fundamentals are a plus.
  • Experience with IT help desk software and remote desktop tools is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Active Directory, Group Policy, and enterprise-level IT environments is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of Windows operating systems, Microsoft 365, networking, and troubleshooting methods.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve basic IT issues in a professional and efficient manner.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn and grow within the IT field.
  • Ability to multitask and handle multiple issues simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated with strong attention to detail and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to get to and from work.
Physical Requirements:
  • Able and willing to work long hours including day, night, and weekend shifts as needed, and work outside of normal hours.
  • Able to sit, walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Able to work in both office and outside environments, including job sites subject to weather changes, noise, and job hazards.
  • Requires good manual dexterity and the ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
