The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County is seeking an IT Infrastructure Engineer with storage design and VMware virtualization expertise to design, implement, and maintain storage and virtualized environments for the ITS department.

This 24x7 shop requires readiness for nights, weekends, holidays, on-call rotations, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure stability and data protection for Metro Nashville.

Qualifications

• Five years of Windows Server administration experience in a business environment.
• Bachelor's degree or higher in CS/IT (preferred).
• VMware certifications such as VCP are a plus.
• Strong scripting in PowerShell or Python for automation.
• Knowledge of storage design (SAN/NAS/DAS) and disaster recovery concepts.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement storage architectures (SAN/NAS/DAS) and data tiering.
• Deploy, configure, and manage VMware ESXi hosts, vCenter, and clusters.

Position Description

The Information Technology Systems department is seeking a skilled and motivated IT Infrastructure Engineer with specialized expertise in storage solutions and VMware virtualization technologies. The Information Systems Advisor 1 will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and maintaining our organization's storage systems and virtualized environments. This role requires a deep understanding of storage architecture, data management, and virtualization principles to ensure stability, scalability, and performance of our IT infrastructure.

The men and women in Metro’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department work 24-7 to ensure optimum communications both within Metro and between Metro and the general public. Multiple IT teams work to ensure information safety and efficient and effective business transactions.

ITS is a 24x7 information technology shop. Applicant must be willing and available to perform duties as required by the job. This may include work on nights, weekends and holidays.

Typical Duties

Storage Design and Implementation

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess storage requirements and design solutions that align with business needs.
• Deploy and configure storage systems, such as SAN (Storage Area Network), NAS (Network Attached Storage), and DAS (Direct-Attached Storage), considering factors like capacity, performance, redundancy, and disaster recovery.
• Implement data tiering strategies, including SSD, HDD, and cloud-based storage, to optimize data access and cost efficiency.
• Monitor and manage storage capacity, utilization, and performance, proactively addressing potential issues.

VMware Virtualization

• Design, deploy, and manage VMware virtualization infrastructure, including ESXi hosts, vCenter servers, clusters, and virtual distributed switching.
• Create and maintain virtual machines (VMs) based on application requirements, ensuring appropriate resource allocation and performance.
• Implement and manage high availability (HA) and fault tolerance (FT) features to enhance system reliability.
• Monitor virtualization performance metrics, troubleshoot issues, and optimize resource utilization.

Backup and Disaster Recovery

• Develop and execute backup and disaster recovery strategies for both storage and virtualization environments, ensuring data integrity and minimal downtime.
• Perform regular backups, test recovery processes, and maintain documentation for recovery procedures.
• Collaborate with security teams to ensure data protection and compliance with industry regulations.

Technical Support and Troubleshooting

• Provide technical support to internal teams for storage and virtualization-related inquiries and issues.
• Diagnosing and resolving system and network problems, working towards quick resolutions to minimize impact on operations.
• Participate in on-call rotations to address critical incidents outside of regular business hours.
• May transport Equipment to various sites for different departments.

Infrastructure Optimization

• Identify opportunities to enhance infrastructure performance, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.
• Implement automation and scripting to streamline routine tasks, deployments, and updates.
• Stay current with industry trends and best practices to recommend and implement improvements.

Minimum Qualifications

Five (5) years of experience administering Windows Server (physical and virtual) operating systems in a business-level setting.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
• Relevant certifications such as VMware Certified Professional (VCP) and storage-related certifications are a plus
• Strong scripting skills (e.g., PowerShell, Python) for automation and task efficiency
• Familiarity with backup and disaster recovery concepts and tools
• Ability to manage server performance, monitoring, and inventory documentation
