Job summary

Black Hawk County is seeking hands-on workers to assist with Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management. Responsibilities include weed control, vegetation establishment, erosion control, and record keeping using GIS systems.

You will operate county equipment, drive tractors and snow plows, and perform a variety of manual tasks while adhering to safety procedures. A CDL-A, pesticide license, and related training are required within stated timeframes.

Qualifications

  • Requires high school diploma or GED and 6+ months related experience or training.
  • Must obtain/maintain Iowa CDL Type A within 6 months and Tanker endorsement.
  • Must have or obtain Iowa Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s license (1A, 3OT, 5, 6) within 1 year.
  • Must have or obtain NWCG S-130 and S-190 training within 1 year from hire.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to email/word process; ability to read safety and maintenance manuals.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in roadside vegetation tasks including control of invasive weeds, brush, and trees using mechanical or chemical methods (herbicide spraying, mowing, cutting, prescribed burning).
  • Plant seeds to promote native vegetation re-growth.
  • Assist with erosion control installations (erosion blankets, waddles).
  • Maintain accurate records using GIS mapping of treated locations.
  • Operate county equipment and drive farm-type tractors with mower attachments; drive truck with snow plow blades and hopper spreader to remove snow/ice and spread sand/salt.
  • Occasionally haul and spread rock; perform various manual labor tasks as directed.
  • Follow safety procedures and perform equipment inspections; other duties as assigned.

Job description

Under general supervision of the Roadside Biologist and Road Superintendent; assists with the Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management related work to control noxious weeds and promote desirable vegetation, performs heavy manual labor; drives truck and operates other equipment to maintain County roads.

  • Must be capable of regular and predictable attendance at a specified location in order to perform assigned tasks.
  • Assists in roadside vegetation tasks such as control of invasive weeds, brush, and trees through mechanical and/or chemical methods, including herbicide spraying, mowing, cutting and prescribed burning.
  • Plants seed to promote healthy re-growth and establishment of native plant communities.
  • Assists with erosion control, including installation of erosion control blankets, waddles, and other products.
  • Assists with accurate record keeping, including use of GIS mapping systems, of treated locations.
  • Operates County equipment as necessary including hand and power tools.
  • Drives farm-type tractor with mower attachment to cut grass and weeds.
  • Drives truck with attached snow plow blades and hopper spreader to remove snow/ice and spread sand/salt on road surfaces.
  • Occasionally hauls and spreads rock.
  • Performs a variety of manual labor and other duties as directed.
  • Follows proper safety procedures and takes pro-active measures to avoid potential harm to equipment and personnel.
  • Performs routine inspections of equipment to ensure safety and operability.
  • Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
  • Administrative supervision is received from the Roadside Biologist.
  • Functional supervision is received from the Roadside Biologist, Road Superintendent & Road Foreman.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
  • No Functional or administrative supervision is exercised over support staff.
  • Must meet Secondary Roads residency requirements with 6 months of hire date: reside within a 45-minute response time, in normal fair weather driving conditions, from the Longfellow Shop, located at 1329 Longfellow Ave, Waterloo.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Six (6) months or more related experience and/or training required.
  • Must possess or attain a CDL within six (6) months and maintain a valid Iowa Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Type A and be insurable under the County's guidelines.
  • Must have valid Iowa CDL Type A – Tanker Endorsement or able to obtain the endorsement within six (6) months from date of hire.
  • Must have a valid State of Iowa Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s license - Categories 1A – Agricultural Weed Control, 3OT – Ornamental and Turf Pest Control, 5 – Aquatic Pest Control, 6 – Right of Way Pest Control or the ability to obtain the license within sone year from the date of hire.
  • Must have a valid certification or completion of training in National Wildfire Coordinating Group S-130 and S-190 or the ability to complete the training within one year from date of hire.
  • Must possess basic computer skills and be able to communicate through email and word processing.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
