Job summary

The City of Cedar Park is seeking an Irrigation Technician to perform skilled labor focused on irrigation maintenance, installation, plumbing, and electrical repair across City facilities.

Responsibilities include managing the Hunter Central Control system, inspecting and repairing thousands of sprinklers, valves, and backflow devices, and implementing water-conservation practices. Requires Driver's License and relevant maintenance experience.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; two years of general maintenance experience.
  • For Irrigation Technician II, four years of maintenance experience are required or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License with acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and program Hunter Irrigation Central Control system and adjust run times seasonally.
  • Inspect and repair over 6,000 sprinklers and thousands of feet of drip lines.
  • Repair leaks, valves, and backflow devices within 24 hours and coordinate with outside contractors as needed.
  • Install and maintain irrigation valves, boxes, RPZs and electrical components.
  • Support water conservation practices and maintain accurate facility records.

Job description

JOB SUMMARY


Performs skilled labor with a major emphasis in irrigation maintenance, installation, plumbing, and electrical repair, operation of central control irrigation system, and general park duties at related City facilities.

  • Manage and program Hunter Irrigation Central Control computer system. Make seasonal adjustments based on weather and field conditions.
  • Irrigation inspections and audits. Audits occur 2 to 3 times per calendar year.
  • Maintenance and repair of over 6,000 sprinklers.
  • Maintenance and repair of thousands of feet of drip line and drip emitters.
  • Repair leaks of irrigation pipe and fittings within 24 hours. Typically, staff repairs 3 to 4 leaks per week.
  • Inspect and repair all Irrigation Clocks and/or Satellites.
  • Repair broken and/or leaking gate and ball valves.
  • Installation, leveling and repair of Irrigation Valve Boxes.
  • Repair and inspect Reduce Pressure Zone Assemblies (RPZ) and Backflow devices.
  • Irrigation electrical repair, troubleshooting and installation including 2-wire systems.
  • Tests all necessary backflow devices. Requires training and license (Irrigation Tech II).
  • Planning and the implementation of Water Conservation Practices, i.e. seasonal adjustment of run times, use of weather stations.
  • Maintains detailed blueprints, diagrams and “as built” for all City Irrigation Systems.
  • Records water usage data.
  • Irrigation design and installation.
  • Provides technical expertise to outside contractors, vendors, gardeners, volunteers, and City staff.
  • Irrigation wire and pipe locating. Requires the training and use of specific locating equipment.
  • Follows all state and county guidelines.
  • Operates all necessary equipment for the installation and maintenance irrigation systems located on City of Cedar Park property.
  • Inputs all irrigation related tasks into the Lucity Work Order program.
  • Orders all parts and tools necessary to complete job.
  • Knowledge and use of all necessary equipment related to construction surveying.
  • Maintenance and repair of all 45 water and dog fountains located at City parks.
  • Installation, repair and maintenance of toilets and sinks.
  • Hose spigot and pipe (including brass) repair at Community Gardens and parks facilities.
  • Ability to repair brass pipe and fittings.
  • Prepare all facilities, water fountains and community gardens for cold weather to prevent freeze damage.
  • Clears clogged sinks, toilets, and drains.
  • Test electricity at all park facilities and pavilions prior to rentals.
  • Repair electrical outlets.
  • Repair and install light fixtures and ballast.
  • Irrigation electrical installation and repair including two wire systems.
  • Inspect and repair photocells and/or motion sensors.
  • Inspect and repair hand dryers.
  • Fertilizer, herbicide and insecticide calibration and application.
  • Maintains accurate records of Fertilizer and Pesticide Applications.
  • Changes all door locks and hardware annually at tennis courts and other park facilities.
  • Coordinates, leads, and participates in preparing ground for planting, cultivating, fertilizing, watering and pruning flowers, shrubs and trees.
  • Mows, propagates and/or trims grass and brush, including use of various light equipment and handheld tools.
  • Helps train other employees in the proper care of irrigation systems, lawns and plants, spraying and cultivating of shrubbery, hedges and trees, and the operation and care of tools and equipment.
  • Keeps Foreman informed regularly on job status.
  • Watches for pests, disease or other deteriorating agents and keeps Foreman informed of developments to ensure eradication.
  • Operates necessary vehicles and tools, including pickup truck, chainsaw, carpentry tools, and garden tools.
  • Cleans and maintains safety standards in Parks and Recreation shop area.
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned.

Acceptable Experience, Training, Certifications and Licenses

Irrigation Technician I

High School Diploma, or its equivalent, plus

Two (2) years of general maintenance experience;

Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certifications and Licenses
TCEQ Irrigation License required within 90 days of obtaining the position.

Valid Texas Driver's License, with acceptable driving record.

Irrigation Technician II

High School Diploma, or its equivalent, plus

Four (4) years of general maintenance experience;

Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certifications and Licenses
TCEQ Irrigation License AND Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester License.

Pesticide Applicators License preferred.

Valid Texas Driver's License, with acceptable driving record.
