Job Summary

The Irrigation Technician performs skilled irrigation installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work at assigned job sites under limited supervision. This position ensures all irrigation activities are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established Jensen landscape irrigation standards. The Irrigation Technician utilizes appropriate tools, equipment, and industry best practices to maintain system performance, promote water conservation, and support the overall health and appearance of landscaped properties. This role requires a strong commitment to safety, quality workmanship, customer service, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with team members.

Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Irrigation certification required, or ability to obtain certification within a designated timeframe.
Experience
  • 3–5 years of irrigation maintenance and repair experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing irrigation systems, including wiring, controllers, valves, sprinklers, and PVC piping.
  • Experience safely operating power tools and equipment such as drills, jackhammers, trenchers, and tampers.
  • Experience working in landscape maintenance environments and supporting field crews.
Licenses & Certifications
  • Valid Florida Driver License required.
  • Clean driving record with the ability to meet company vehicle insurance requirements.
  • Irrigation certification required or ability to obtain certification as required by the company.
Specialized Skills & Knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of landscape and irrigation maintenance techniques, methods, and equipment.
  • Complete understanding of irrigation wiring, wire troubleshooting, and fault locating.
  • Knowledge of PVC pipe applications, including Class and Schedule-rated pipe.
  • Ability to select appropriate sprinkler heads and nozzles based on site conditions and system compatibility.
  • Basic understanding of electrical and electronic circuitry, including minor controller repairs.
  • Ability to program, operate, and manually control irrigation controllers and stations.
  • Knowledge of water management principles, including water budgeting, GPM, GPH, CCF, HCF, acreage calculations, and unit conversions.
  • Understanding of distribution uniformity, pipe sizing, flow rates, and water velocity.
  • Knowledge of hydrozoning concepts, including sun exposure, plant requirements, slopes, and soil conditions.
  • Ability to identify soil types, field capacity, and basic plant stress indicators.
  • Advanced understanding of sprinkler positioning, adjustments, and system optimization.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally with clients, the public, supervisors, and crew members.
  • Proficiency in all Irrigation I-level skills, equipment operation, and technical knowledge.
Essential Duties
  • Consistently shows up for work on time at the assigned location; if unable to work, notifies the Supervisor immediately.
  • Shows up for work fully dressed in appropriate uniform including approved footwear.
  • Unloads the vehicle after work and loads it for the next day of work; maintains vehicle by keeping it clean and organized.
  • Reads and understands irrigation plans.
  • Creates as-built drawings, site activity maps, irrigation diagnostics, and work orders.
  • Repairs pipes, installs and repairs various sprinkler system components and irrigation valves, and performs main line repairs up to and including 4" pipes.
  • Positions sprinklers appropriately and correctly in relation to grade, curbs, walls, and windows.
  • Disassembles, troubleshoots, and repairs solenoid operated irrigation control valves.
  • Demonstrates the ability to install a new replacement valve.
  • Demonstrates ability to make proper flow control adjustments; turns controllers on and off and manually operates a single station or program from the controller.
  • Checks irrigation programs on the controller and can operate a valve electronically by remote and program irrigation controllers.
  • Performs work and uses tools and equipment (drills, jackhammers, trenchers, tampers) in a proper and safe manner.
  • Completes field paperwork.
  • Accurately fills out and signs the timecards with hours worked and work orders for each site/project for each day worked.
  • Makes a parts list for materials needed.
  • Reports any injury or illness to the Supervisor immediately.
  • Inspects equipment before use to ensure proper and safe operation and reports problems to the Supervisor immediately.
  • Reports unsafe work conditions or practices to the Supervisor immediately.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Physical Demands
  • Duties are performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. of weight frequently throughout the day.
  • Ability to repeatedly bend, stoop, lift, push and pull materials and equipment to complete job tasks.
  • Ability to work in various positions including, but not limited to, standing, walking, stooping, bending, sitting, kneeling and squatting for extended periods.
