Major Duties

Under general supervision, the Irrigation Specialist maintains all irrigation systems and makes repairs on irrigation valves, heads, nozzles, pipes, controllers, and other related irrigation equipment. The incumbent assists in the establishment and maintenance of an irrigation preventive maintenance program. Coordinates and monitors irrigation schedules through the use of the energy management system computer and other types of controllers. Performs installation and modification of irrigation systems, including soil moisture sensors, flow meters, and flow switches. Keeps appropriate records and reports, including materials use reports and inventory control.

  • Maintains all irrigation systems and makes repairs on irrigation valves, heads, nozzles, pipes, controllers and other related irrigation equipment.
  • Coordinates and monitors irrigation schedules through the use of the energy management system computer and other types of controllers.
  • Performs installation and modification of irrigation systems, including soil moisture sensors, flow meters and flow switches.
  • Uses mobile devices and web-based irrigation controller apps to make adjustments in the field and troubleshoot irrigation emergencies.
  • Performs water auditing procedures to determine the efficiency of irrigation systems and to determine the quality of precipitation rates.
  • Performs installation and modification of irrigation systems, including soil moisture sensors, wire tracing, flow meters, and flow switches.
  • Two years of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or general grounds, with one year in the maintenance, repair, or modification of irrigation systems and irrigation equipment.
  • LICENSE: CANDIDATE MUST POSSESS A VALID CALIFORNIA DRIVER’S LICENSE.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of irrigation system design, installation, repair, and preventive maintenance practices; soil and vegetation conditions affecting water retention and evaporation; irrigation controllers, sensors, flow devices, and energy management systems; and University standards related to irrigation infrastructure and water efficiency.
  • Knowledge of water auditing methods, irrigation efficiency standards, precipitation rate analysis, and climate-based irrigation scheduling; and irrigation parts, materials, and equipment used to improve water conservation, system performance, and energy efficiency.
  • Ability to inspect, install, modify, and repair irrigation systems; coordinate and monitor irrigation schedules using computerized and mobile-based controller systems; prepare and revise irrigation sketches and blueprints; maintain accurate records and inventory controls; collaborate effectively with contractors; and safely operate powered equipment, vehicles, and hand and power tools in outdoor environments.
  • Ability to evaluate irrigation system efficiency and make controller adjustments based on climate and landscape requirements; maintain and track inventory of irrigation parts and supplies; prepare supply orders and provide recommendations on materials that support energy savings and operational efficiency; and provide work direction to Groundsworkers and other staff during irrigation-related project and maintenance activities.

  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $3736 - $4646 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $3736 - $5232 per month.
  • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. May include evenings and weekends.
  • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
  • The individual hired for this role will physically work on-campus in Northridge. This is not a telecommute position.
