Job Summary
The Irrigation Service Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and optimizing residential and commercial irrigation systems. This position plays a key role in ensuring irrigation systems operate efficiently, safely, and in accordance with client expectations. Working independently and alongside operations and project management teams, the Irrigation Service Technician performs system inspections, troubleshooting, repairs, controller programming, seasonal start-ups, and winterizations while delivering exceptional customer service. The ideal candidate has strong irrigation troubleshooting experience, basic electrical knowledge, and the ability to communicate effectively with customers and team members.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Irrigation Service & Repair
- Diagnose and repair irrigation system issues, including leaks, broken pipes, valves, sprinkler heads, wiring, and controllers.
- Perform irrigation system inspections and preventative maintenance services.
- Troubleshoot electrical components, control systems, sensors, pumps, and irrigation controllers.
- Program and adjust irrigation controllers to maximize system efficiency and water conservation.
- Complete spring start-ups, mid-season inspections, and winterization services.
- Test irrigation zones and verify proper system operation.
- Identify and recommend repairs, upgrades, and enhancements to customers.
Customer Service
- Communicate professionally with residential and commercial clients regarding service findings and recommendations.
- Explain repair options, maintenance requirements, and system operation to customers.
- Ensure a high level of customer satisfaction on every service call.
- Respond promptly to service requests and emergency irrigation repair needs.
Operations & Documentation
- Complete daily work orders, service reports, timesheets, and customer documentation.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, materials used, and service recommendations.
- Coordinate schedules and service activities with management and dispatch teams.
- Track inventory and ensure service vehicles are properly stocked and maintained.
Safety & Equipment
- Operate company vehicles, tools, and equipment safely.
- Follow OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
- Perform routine maintenance and inspections on assigned equipment and vehicles.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of irrigation service, repair, or installation experience.
- Strong knowledge of irrigation systems, controllers, valves, wiring, and sprinkler components.
- Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot irrigation and electrical issues.
- Experience with residential and commercial irrigation systems.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage daily service schedules.
Preferred Qualifications
- Irrigation Technician Certification (CIT), CLIA, or similar industry certification.
- Knowledge of smart controllers and water management technology.
- Electrical troubleshooting experience.
- Backflow certification is a plus.
- Primarily works outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Frequent exposure to heat, cold, rain, humidity, and construction environments.
- Regular use of hand tools, power tools, and service equipment is required.
- Occasional exposure to electrical and mechanical hazards.
- May be required to work extended hours, weekends, and seasonal schedules based on business needs.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, and digging.
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods.
- Ability to operate service vehicles, tools, and irrigation equipment safely.
