Join UCLA’s Grounds team to install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair manual and automatic irrigation systems across campus landscapes. This hands-on role supports a safe and well-maintained outdoor environment as part of a dedicated team.

You will read irrigation plans, operate related tools, and document maintenance in CMMS while upholding water-conservation practices. Weekend/overtime work may be required in emergencies.

Qualifications

  • Six years irrigation experience in a commercial maintenance environment preferred (Preferred)
  • Cal/OSHA Competent Person Training (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of water management and conservation practices (Required)
  • Ability to read and interpret irrigation specifications and plans (Required)
  • Ability to operate related hand and power tools and equipment (Required)
  • Ability to document work orders and maintain records in CMMS (Required)
  • Ability to work weekends and respond to emergencies (Required)

Department Summary

The Irrigation Mechanic maintains and supports campus landscapes, irrigation systems, and outdoor areas. The department provides safe, efficient, and cost-effective services to ensure campus grounds remain functional, attractive, and well maintained.

Position Summary

Join UCLA’s Grounds team and help maintain the irrigation systems that keep our campus landscapes thriving. In this hands-on role, you’ll install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair manual and automatic irrigation systems while supporting a safe, efficient, and well-maintained campus environment. We’re looking for a skilled, safety-minded professional who takes pride in quality work and enjoys working outdoors as part of a dedicated team.

Salary & Compensation

UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications
  • Irrigation Work Six years of irrigation experience in a commercial maintenance environment is preferred (Preferred)
  • Cal/OSHA Cal/OSHA Competent Person Training (Preferred)
  • Working knowledge of the tools, materials, equipment, and procedures related to installation and repair of all manual and automatic irrigation systems, as well as knowledge of water management principles and water conservation practices. (Required)
  • Ability to maintain, repair, install and/or alter various types of irrigations systems. (Required)
  • Ability to read, interpret and understand technical language in landscape irrigation specifications and plans. (Required)
  • Ability to properly and safely operate related hand and power tools as well as power driven equipment such as trencher, skip loader. (Required)
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, subordinates, supervisors, administrators, customers, visitors and outside agencies. (Required)
  • Oral communication skills to obtain or convey clear, concise and grammatically correct information. (Required)
  • Ability to write standard English text using correct grammar and spelling to complete reports, forms and work orders that are accurate and easy to comprehend. (Required)
  • Ability to use computers, mobile devices, and CMMS applications to receive and complete digital work orders, document work performed, update job status, and maintain accurate electronic maintenance records. (Required)
  • Skill in performing mathematical calculations to determine square footage and linear footage for trenching and new or retrofit irrigation pipe installations. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of standard safe work practices. (Required)
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments. (Required)
  • Ability to respond to off-hour emergencies and overtime as required. Ability to work weekends as needed. (Required)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
  • High School Diploma High school diploma or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant irrigation experience. (Required)
  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)
  • Possession of Forklift Certification 100 (Preferred)
  • Must possess California Driver's License, Class C and ability to drive a University truck or other light vehicle in the course of duties. 100 (Required)
Special Conditions for Employment
  • Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Driving Record: The position is subject to the California DMV Pull Notice System and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record.
