Job description

Job Description: Journeyman Steel Erector

This position requires a Journeyman Certification, typically with 3 or more years of documented field experience in the chosen craft discipline. The candidate must be able to read and interpret instructions, document work, plan, and perform activities independently. NCCER certifications (written and/or practical) are required.

Summary

The role involves raising, placing, and uniting girders, columns, and other structural steel members to form completed structures or frameworks as part of a crew.

Responsibilities
  1. Set up hoisting equipment and use basic rigging knowledge to raise and position structural steel members.
  2. Fasten steel members to hoist cables using chains, cables, or ropes.
  3. Signal hoisting equipment operators to lift and place steel members.
  4. Guide members into position using tag lines.
  5. Pull, push, or pry steel members into approximate position while supported by hoisting devices.
  6. Secure members in final position using turnbuckles, crowbars, jacks, and hand tools.
  7. Align bolt holes in steel members using drift pins or spud wrenches.
  8. Verify vertical and horizontal alignment with plumb bobs and levels.
  9. Perform cutting and welding of steel members using oxyacetylene equipment as needed.
  10. Load, transport, unload materials, tools, and supplies.
  11. Assist in lifting, positioning, and securing materials during installation.
  12. Perform minor maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment.
  13. Adhere to all safety and project rules, including wearing personal safety equipment.
  14. Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with experience in the field or related area.
  • Knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures within the field.
  • Ability to follow instructions and pre-established guidelines.
  • Work under immediate supervision; independent judgment is not typically exercised.
  • Report to a supervisor or manager.
Physical Requirements

Physical demands include standing (60%), walking (20%), sitting (20%), lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs., pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, reaching, handling, and fingering, with varying frequencies as indicated by symbols.
