Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

Raises, modifies, places, and bolts or welds structural-steel members to form completed structures or frameworks, working as a member of a crew.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Read and interpret measuring tools such as tape measure, speed square, framing square, etc., to perform tasks accurately.
  2. Fully understand Plant North and drawing directions.
  3. Assist in setting up hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural-steel members.
  4. Assist in fastening steel members to cables of hoists, slings, or ropes.
  5. Assist in guiding members using tag lines (ropes). Pull, push, or pries steel members into approximate position while supported by hoisting devices.
  6. Assist in forcing members into final position using turnbuckles, sleever bars, come-alongs, jacks, and hand tools.
  7. Assist in aligning holes in members with corresponding holes in previously placed members by drifting drift pins or using wrenches through holes. Use bolt holes with spud wrenches, sleever bars, bull pins, and drift pins.
  8. Assist in bolting aligned members to keep them in position until permanently bolted or welded.
  9. Assist in cutting and welding steel members for modifications using oxyacetylene torches, cut-off wheels, porta bands, and electric welding equipment.
  10. Work in other crafts as trained and directed by supervision. Must follow instructions from higher-skilled workers or foremen.
  11. Have basic knowledge of heavy industrial construction processes.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 2-3 years related experience and/or training or equivalent education and experience.
  • Minimum 2 months of experience as a helper.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of MIC Health and Safety programs and project regulations.
  • Participate in daily toolbox meetings and set a safe example.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, instructions, and manuals.
  • Perform basic math operations and measurements.
  • Follow written and oral instructions accurately.
  • Ability to work precisely and follow procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work up to 12-hour shifts in varying outdoor conditions.
  • Maintain strength and stamina; lift objects up to 50 pounds; perform physical tasks including stooping, kneeling, balancing, crouching, crawling, and climbing.
  • Work at heights, in confined spaces, and in environments with dust, fumes, and loud noises.
  • Wear PPE including safety shoes, gloves, glasses, hearing protection, helmet, and vest.
  • Visualize objects in 3D from drawings and distinguish details and differences in shapes and shading.
