Job summary

TIC - The Industrial Company in Abilene, TX is seeking entry-level helpers to assist skilled craftsmen on construction projects involving structural steel. You will learn to read blueprints, follow supervisor directions, and contribute to fabricating, lifting, and fitting steel components.

Responsibilities include unloading, positioning, aligning, cutting, and welding steel parts while maintaining safety on a busy site.

Qualifications

• Field experience in chosen craft discipline and knowledge of safe tool use.

Responsibilities

• Assist skilled craftsmen to fabricate or assemble metal parts per blueprints.
• Unload and position prefabricated steel units; hoist beams with cranes or signaling equipment.
• Verify alignment of structural members using plumb bobs, lasers, or levels.
• Cut, bend, or weld steel pieces using shears, torches, or welding gear.
• Assemble hoisting equipment and riggings to move heavy materials on site.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

• Learn to read specifications or blueprints to determine the locations, quantities, or sizes of material required.
• Assist skilled craftsmanf to fabricate metal parts, such as steel frames, columns, beams, or girders, according to blueprints or instructions from supervisors.
• Assist with unloading and positioning prefabricated steel units for hoisting; hoists steel beams, girders, or columns into place, using cranes or signaling hoisting equipment operators to lift and position structural steel members.
• Learn to verify vertical and horizontal alignment of structural steel members, using plumb bobs, laser equipment, transits, or levels.
• Cuts, bends, or welds steel pieces, using metal shears, torches, or welding equipment.
• Assemble hoisting equipment or riggings, such as cables, pulleys, or hooks, to move heavy equipment or materials.

Qualifications

• May require a high school diploma or its equivalent with previous years of experience in the field or in a related area.
• Must possess knowledge skills and abilities for position
• Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions and communicate effectively with management/supervision
• Field experience in chosen craft discipline
• Knowledge of the safe and efficient use of hand tools, power tools and layout tools.

Requirements

• The person in this position needs to constantly move about a construction/industrial site, so should be able to stand, walk, sit, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl
• Constantly works in a construction environment and will be exposed to changing outdoor weather conditions
• Work irregular hours, weekends, overtime and holidays as required
• May be required to use ladders/mechanical platforms/manlifts/scaffold to access required equipment/work areas (may exceed 200 feet), so must be able to climb and maintain balance on formwork, steel formwork, stairs, ladders and scaffolds
• Move and work in and around confined and cluttered places, and uneven surfaces
• Must be able to complete tasks in a noisy and dusty environment
• May be required/able to move items weighing up to 50 pounds across construction/industrial site
• Must have required tools
• Licenses (List Requirements)
• Observe and comply with all safety and project rules, perform other duties as required
• Ability to pass pre-access drug and alcohol testing and fit for duty medical
