Job summary

Aerotek is seeking an Iron Worker for Columbus, OH to assemble and install structural metal components on commercial and industrial projects. You will lay out, align, and fit fabricated parts, operate torches, saws, and lifts, and work with a team to meet safety and project milestones.

This contract-to-hire position requires OSHA 10 and site safety practices, with opportunities for progression and hands-on training in structural detailing. Expect onsite, full-time work with overtime as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED or 6 months related experience or training.
  • OSHA 10-hour training completed.
  • Rough terrain forklift certification.
  • Aerial lift certification.

Job Title: Iron Worker
Job Description

This role assembles and installs structural metal components by accurately laying out, positioning, aligning, and fitting together fabricated parts for commercial and industrial construction projects. The iron worker operates a variety of tools and equipment, follows safety procedures, and supports the crew by performing both core structural tasks and general site duties as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Lay out, position, align, and fit together fabricated parts of structural metal according to drawings and instructions.
  • Shake out parts and organize structural components for efficient installation.
  • Position or tighten braces, jacks, and clamps to secure structural members in place.
  • Bolt parts in position to prepare for welding or final bolting.
  • Use a transit to locate and verify reference points for structural alignment.
  • Demonstrate the proper use of all required personal protective equipment at all times.
  • Identify and select proper rigging equipment for various lifts.
  • Use and understand standard crane signals to communicate with operators safely.
  • Operate cut-off saws to cut structural members and components accurately.
  • Operate different types of man lifts safely and in compliance with site procedures.
  • Operate a Sawzall to cut and modify structural elements as required.
  • Begin learning to rig structural members for lifting and placement under supervision.
  • Begin learning to complete structural detailing as directed by supervisors.
  • Develop an understanding of Skyweb strapping and its proper application.
  • Operate a cutting torch to perform straight and bevel cuts on structural steel.
  • Begin learning to read and interpret pre-engineered erection drawings.
  • Help train under-skilled coworkers by sharing knowledge and safe work practices.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned by a superintendent, supervisor, or crew leader.
  • Work in other trades as needed to support project progress.
  • Perform general maintenance or cleanup work to maintain a safe and orderly jobsite.
  • Attend appropriate training courses when requested in order to progress to the next level.
  • Travel to various job locations as required by project needs.
  • Work overtime and Saturdays as needed to meet project schedules.
Essential Skills
  • Proven ability to lay out, position, align, and fit together fabricated structural metal parts.
  • Experience with structural steel work, including bolting, rigging, welding support, and torch cutting.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and manuals.
  • Basic math skills to perform measurements, calculations, and layout work.
  • Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools and power tools commonly used in structural and millwright work.
  • Knowledge of proper rigging practices and the ability to identify appropriate rigging equipment.
  • Ability to use crane signals correctly and communicate clearly with crane operators.
  • Capability to operate cut-off saws and Sawzall tools safely and effectively.
  • Ability to operate different types of man lifts safely in a construction environment.
  • Ability to operate a cutting torch for straight and bevel cuts on structural members.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to job locations as required.
  • Willingness to work overtime and Saturdays as needed to support project demands.
  • High school diploma or GED, or in the absence of a diploma or GED, at least six (6) months of related experience and/or training.
  • OSHA 10-hour training completed.
  • Rough terrain forklift certification.
  • Aerial lift certification.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in commercial construction environments.
  • Experience in industrial construction environments.
  • Experience in welding, millwright work, or related trades.
  • Ability to begin reading and interpreting pre-engineered erection drawings.
  • Interest in learning structural detailing and Skyweb strapping systems.
  • Comfort working across different trades as needed on the jobsite.
  • Capability and willingness to help train less experienced coworkers.
  • Readiness to attend additional training courses to advance to the next level.
  • Ability to participate in phone or in-person interviews as part of the hiring process.
  • Ownership of tools aligned with the required tool list in order to progress to the next level.

The environment is hands-on, physically active, and focused on safe, efficient completion of structural work and general site duties.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Columbus, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $34.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
